Nicola Sturgeon has claimed the polarisation of politics in modern Scotland would put at risk the passing of same-sex marriage laws if legislation had been proposed today.

The former first minister said any divisive proposals now “descend into the most vicious, toxic rammy, with bad faith arguments all over the place”.

She said that many policies that would have been seen as uncontroversial when they were passed would now become huge points of division.

“I was the minister who took through [minimum unit pricing],” she told an event organised by Edinburgh University. “I don’t think that would get through and on to the statute book today.
