Readers’ poll: Would you use a self-driving car?

Last week the government passed the UK Automated Vehicles (AV) Bill, paving the way for autonomous vehicles on our roads by 2026. It comes after Wayve, a British company, secured $1 billion in investment for its self-driving car technology, which relies on an artificial intelligence system that actively learns from experience to understand its surroundings and react accordingly.

Enthusiasts for driverless cars say they will be more convenient and safer than relying on human drivers, and will reduce the global toll of 1.2 million road deaths per year. Opponents argue the technology is still unreliable, and say surrendering driving to robots will erode human autonomy and deprive millions of workers of their livelihoods.

What’s your view?

Poll result will be published in The Sunday Times on June 2. See the results of last week’s poll, “Do you like Jonathan Yeo’s portrait of the King?”, here.
