‘We went from a starter house to our forever home in seven years’

James and I met in 2017, and we had a ten-year plan — we wanted to be in a detached house with loads of space [says Sophie Baldwin 31].

When we first met, James had a two-bedroom house in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and I was living at home in Goldsborough, a village nearby.

James was going through a divorce and after the Harrogate house was sold we bought a three-bedroom mid-terrace in the village of Glasshouses, 12 miles away, in August 2017. It cost £215,000 and although there was nothing particularly wrong with it, it looked awful.

It was painted purple everywhere and it didn’t have a proper fitted kitchen, just an Ikea freestanding one. We knew there was money to be made
