The last time I spoke to Raheem Sterling was outside Stamford Bridge after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg trouncing of Middlesbrough. Sterling had played well, helping to set up three goals, albeit against Sky Bet Championship opposition, and he was smiling.
Occasionally when you see Sterling, he looks haunted, almost hunted, but on that night he was smiling, because of the win and because he had contributed. It was sad to see the haunted look return on Sunday.
Chelsea’s No 7 had a wretched game against Leicester City, taking the penalty off the clinical Cole Palmer and striking his kick at the goalkeeper, endangering flights heading into Heathrow with a shocking free kick and missing a one-on-one chance before being booed by his own fans
