The Oxford admissions process has apparently never been easy for those who play the flute

Sir, When interviewed for Oxford in 1965 to study maths, I was greeted by the senior tutor with the exclamation: “Oh no, not another flautist — you are the fourth I have seen this morning!” (letter, Aug 28, and report, Aug 27). I was not offered a place. I am happy to say that my flute-playing was not seen as a problem elsewhere, as I was offered places by all three of the other universities to which I applied.
