Maybe this is my non-American ass talking, but like: a political party convention with a set list of pre-elected speakers who amplify the party message, where critiques and motions and alternatives can not be brought forward on the public floor... that's not something we associate with democracy.

This isn't how party conventions work where I live. I'm not in a political party as a member, but if I was, I could go to a convention with a policy proposal, get enough support to bring it to the floor, and not just 'speak' but actually call a binding vote on it. That's normal political party convention stuff.
