Honestly, this was probably Buffy’s healthiest relationship.

There’s a LOT to unpack about this ep, this scene, this relationship, but I wanna talk about how this world was filmed.

I remember distinctly reading that they used a different kind of camera for this episode, and that as a result Sarah/Michelle/Emma/Alyson all looked gaunt and drawn, especially in the wide shots, whereas Amber, who was always a little more average in weight looked healthy.

Because of this, the wide shot of them sitting there is incredibly haunting. Because Sarah, whose always been shown as physical and strong on the show, looks really weak and I think they said it was purposeful? But it’s effective.

Yeah I feel like it’s s easy to toss Tara off as “willow’s girlfriend” instead of a character in her own right but honestly by the middle of season 6 Tara was my second-fave character (aka fave after Buffy herself). She was just so goddamned SMART. In a way that most of the other characters (even our geniuses Willow and Giles) weren’t. She was smart in an introspective way. She could see to the heart of the people around her, understand why they were behaving the way they were, and understand what they needed. Like if Tara had still been alive, Empty Places would never have happened because she would have reminded everyone (in a much calmer way than Spike eventually did) of exactly what Buffy had done for them. She seemed to understand and respect Buffy in a slightly more nuanced way than the others as well. Like I feel like Tara saw the cracks in Buffy’s outward strength (and looked at them with real empathy) but also saw and had more trust in Buffy’s overall ability to keep going. Because Buffy is actually so smart herself and such a natural born leader, and she has this deep unyielding sort of perseverance that never left even when she was actively falling apart. Tara saw that in Buffy and in her quiet way throughout the seasons she gave Buffy the support and trust and kindness that she needed to keep going. And none of that is even to mention all the ways that Tara used her, frankly supernatural, empathic abilities to help the rest of the group and to be the only truly stable caretaker that Dawn had for season six. Tara was always shown as being a somewhat less poweful witch than Willow, but I think Tara’s powers were just more subtle. She was the one who could always truly SEE, even when everything and everyone else was a mess of complicated emotions and pain and anger and stress. Tara saw through it, and knew how to make it better.

Holmes deceiving Watson because he needs Watson to lie for him but doesn't trust him to do it well, vs Holmes trusting Watson to lie and bringing him in on the scheme (he doesn't do it well but it works out anyway, shoutout to the best girl in the world)

"Let him be my master elsewhere, I at least was his in a sick-room" vs "I am here to be used". I'm fine I'm actually really normal about all of this okay

There are unique ice formations formed by convection from the depths of the lake. There are 330 inflowing rivers.

I dunno, Lake Baikal sure is a thing.
