Sleep, Water Lily. Chapter 16 preview

The moon!

Laura damn near slammed against the window in her rush to see outside. A sliver of shining silver had already appeared in the sky, spilling more of its pale light upon the ground with each passing second.

When she ran out to the hallway, it was empty; even Constance had quieted down. Down, down, down the unstable servants’ stairs Laura ran, through the kitchen and out the back door. The soft garden soil stuck to her boots as she sprinted to the turned off section of the fence and ducked into the cut in the mesh she had seen Kaylee and Max escape through weeks ago.

In the house, Caleb and his father began to scream and roar, and Laura ran faster, to the trees and away from the sounds.

As for Travis and Laura, they’d just have to show up, and show up they did, driving up to the house when the afternoon light had barely started to change. The moment Travis opened the front door, however, it became clear that things weren’t going according to plan. Constance was home.

When Laura could no longer bear the maps’ muted green, she’d shuffle out onto the deck and look at the field and the woods beyond it. One thing was certain: every once in a while, he returned to the Appalachians. He was going to return to Hackett’s Quarry.

Sometimes, as she surveyed the trees, Laura could swear she saw Anne Radcliffe’s broken silhouette in the twilight beneath the branches. Then she would blink, and it would be gone. Laura wondered in those moments if putting an end to the curse would help rest her soul.

Probably not.

Silas Vorez didn’t kill Ann—Caleb did. Silas didn’t throw the hikers’ bodies in the lake.

Laura dreamed of Anne one time. She stood at the foot of the bed in her hiking gear, not twisted but dirty and tired like she’d been walking through the wilderness for days. She was watching Laura sleep.

Travis shook her awake because Laura was crying. He held her in the gray light of dawn until her tears had stopped.

Sleep, Water Lily | Hackearney | Chapter 14

It was as if the mellow August afternoon dimmed once she entered, but no ghosts came charging at her. Laura ran upstairs and down the green hallway. Quickly crossing the shadowy master bedroom, she came to a stop in front of Constance’s vanity table. Its broken mirror was covered with a pillowcase—and the tarot deck wasn’t there.

Laura wished their Sunday would last. Travis was off work. After the morning spent in bed, they cuddled on the couch, watching his DVDs—because of course he still had movies on DVD, early 2000s flicks too obscure for Netflix and older classics. He cooked for her. They drank wine and kissed in the kitchen as a tragic black and white love story played out in the background.

It was a good day. She could tell that by the end of it, Travis was happy. And so was she.

On Monday, they drove to the Hacketts.

"I'm not scared of ghosts—or any of that cosmic crap," Travis said when she turned to face him, "but I am afraid you too will get dragged down." Finally, he met her gaze, his features haunted. After a moment, Laura raised her free hand, caressing the deep worry lines around his mouth. What was there to say? She nodded at the boathouse, "Perhaps we can still fix some of it."

With a chuckle, he put a plastic bag in her lap and a cardboard carrier with two coffee cups on the console. Inside the bag was a pack of thick white candles and a brightly colored box. Ouija. Fun with Friends, Laura read as she took the box out.

"Is this from the toy aisle?" she snickered, amused, even though she didn't know where else she’d expect it to be from.

"Best I could do," Travis shrugged, settling at the wheel. "There's a seance table at the camp, but it'd be a problem smuggling it out without Chris noticing."

"Why is there a seance table at your brother's summer camp?"

"We brought it over from the house 'cause Ma hated it."

Laura fought the urge to roll her eyes at him. "A-and why did you have it there?"

"It's from back in the days," Travis said, looking over his shoulder as he maneuvered the car out of their parking spot. "Grand-grandpa Septimus was a believer, and all sorta frauds believed in his money. Claimed the 'spiritual veil' was thin around here…."

"I wonder why."

Travis glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. "Okay, maybe some of them had a point," he amended, turning onto a highway that would bring them around North Kill and back to his part of the woods. They still had to wait until it was dark; at least, that's what online guides to contacting ghosts recommended.

"Guess we'll find out."
