4 schools in Kharkiv cannot be rebuilt, the mayor said.

During the full-scale war, the Russians destroyed in the city:

▪️69% of schools;

▪️57% of kindergartens;

▪️46% of extracurricular educational institutions;

▪️44% of education administration buildings.

Only from August 30 to September 2, the Russians damaged 18 educational institutions. There are more than 200 schools in the city.

This picture of a UPS worker delivering a package on 9/11 right after the second tower was hit is so fascinating to me. I totally would have used two buildings being blown up and the city infrastructure pausing as an excuse to not do my job. Just go back to the depot and call it a day. But no he’s bravely delivering that Backstreet Boys poster or whatever while everyone else stares at the buildings behind him in shock. Went “Well, that sucks. Can’t do anything about it I guess.”

His kids asking him where he was on 9/11 and he’s like “I was there. One block away. Didn’t see anything because I was delivering a Phantom Menace poster.”

I know I keep mentioning it but the fact the thing he’s delivering is so visibly poster shaped is so hilarious. Like if it was a big box labeled MEDICINE, KEEP REFRIGERATED or something visibly important, this photo would be a famous, used as patriotic propaganda about duty in the face of adversity. But this guy delivering what is almost certainly a poster while the South Tower collapses is almost an act of absurdism.

Neither Elon Musk Nor Anybody Else Will Ever Colonize Mars

"In a saner society, a rich guy with Musk's well-known and unapologetically expounded views would sooner find himself under a guillotine than atop a space agency with the power to dragoon the world's resources into his k-hole John Galt cosplay.

"The certainty that he will never make another planet habitable is no comfort to the rest of us, when in the act of trying he may do the opposite to this one. The doomsday scenario is coming from inside the house. I hope he dies on Mars."

my only quibbles: don't penguins reproduce in Antarctica? so do a number of aquatic creatures living beneath the ice shelves

also, "ever" is a very long time. life on Mars could be shielded from radiation by a (very) technologically advanced society capable of building forcefield-generating satellites... sometime around when we become a Type 2 Kardashev-Scale Civilization capable of capturing most of our Sun's energy. when's that? hint: nowhere within Musk's lifetime

otherwise, a brilliant take-down of Musk's plan to colonize Mars (and drain Earth's resources), from The Defector: X

you got it @goodgrammaritan - TL;DR:

Mars is icy cold, largely airless, devoid of a complex ecosystem, and has no magnetosphere to protect against deadly solar radiation, so any thought of terraforming or even colonizing that place is unrealistic

Earth is our perfect habitat - more than that, its ecosystem has evolved to support life over billions of years. even an all-out nuclear war would leave this place better-suited for life than Mars is today

Musk declaring that we must colonize and terraform Mars to save humankind is disingenuous at best - humans attempting to settle the place would quickly die without continuous resupply missions shipped there at vast expense. even then, the radiation would quickly kill them, unless they lived deep underground (in which case they'd soon pray for death)

if he really cared about humans, he'd instead work toward protecting our functioning ecosystem that's threatened right now by corporate greed

but, instead, he (and his ilk) are using the power of their wealth to feed his ego and cosplay Ayn Rand's capitalist character John Galt, further depleting this world's resources while accelerating climate change and mass extinction

This is a slow fandom zone

None of that "Oh no they bomb-dropped all the episodes in a week 1 month ago, I'm late!" "The tag hasn't been active all week is the fandom dead?" "I only got a hundred shares the first hour no one cares about my art"

Slow down

Take a deep breath and slow down

Fandom is YOU. And me and everyone. If we doodle stick figures for a show that ended 30 years ago we aren't "late" or "doing too little", we're playing dolls in our own time and having fun with works of art that mean a lot to us

You can literally watch and engage with something that aired in 2004 as if it aired yesterday

If the tag hasn't been active for 14 months guess what? If YOU post there, it isn't dead. Literally you can talk about anything you want whenever you want there is no weird law against watching things that people aren't actively talk about

Let's be deranged about stories together

I can't tell you how much it pleases me to see posts and art and meta-analysis of works I've loved for decades

for example, there's a new Alien movie in theaters right now. I'm not seeing a ton of fan-related responses to it here, but what I am seeing is many more posts than usual about the original 1979 Alien, and Sigourney Weaver, and such

I mean, love for The Lord of the Rings is not likely to wane any time soon, and it's been in print (and in TV and movies) for a while now

so who all saw the presidential debate?

or should I say the televised event where Kamala Harris presented her policies and plans, and trump ranted about immigrants and executing babies like the creepy racist and misogynist uncle no one feels safe being alone with
