Tributes celebrating the life of 90210 and Charmed star Shannen Doherty, who died on Saturday at the age of 53 after a yearslong battle with breast cancer, have begun pouring in. Former costars, friends, and fans are honoring the iconic ’90s actor on social media, highlighting Doherty’s heroic fight against the disease.

Jennie Garth, who memorably played blonde Kelly Taylor opposite Doherty’s brunette Brenda Walsh on 90210, posted two photos from their time on the hit teen drama together—one in which she’s on a beach with Doherty and a dog, and one in which the two are laughing side by side. “I am still processing my tremendous grief over the loss of my long time friend Shannen, the woman I have often described as one of the strongest people I have ever known,” she wrote. Garth also referenced rumors of tension between her and Doherty on the set of 90210, writing that she and Doherty “were so often pitted against each other but none of that reflected the truth of our real relationship which was one built on mutual respect and admiration.” She described Doherty as courageous, passionate, determined, loving, and generous, writing, “I will miss her and will always honor her deeply in my heart and in my memories.”

Charmed star Alyssa Milano also paid tribute to Doherty while referencing their turbulent past. “It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but at its core was someone I deeply respected and was in awe of,” said Milano in a statement to Variety. Milano, Doherty, and Holly Marie Combs starred on the series as a trio of witchy sisters, but reported tension ultimately led Doherty to leave the series after three seasons. In 2023, Combs alleged that Doherty was fired from Charmed because of Milano, which Milano denied via Instagram—claiming that she “did not have the power to get anyone fired” and that a professional mediator had been brought to set. The mediator, she said, made recommendations to the studio, the network, and producer Aaron Spelling, which ultimately resulted in Doherty’s firing.

Now, though, that water appears to be under the bridge. “She was a talented actress, beloved by many, and the world is less without her,” continued Milano in her statement. “My condolences to all who loved her.”

Rose McGowan, who joined Charmed after Doherty left the series, posted an Instagram reel dedicated to Doherty. “Shannen Doherty had the heart of a lion,” she wrote. In a lengthy post, McGowan said she met Doherty in the ’90s and was inspired by Doherty’s talent and perseverance. “Our lives had been intertwined in a unique way,” she continued. “We laughed at dark forces who wanted us to hate each other, instead we chose love and respect. A soft-hearted badass as there ever was.” McGowan also shared the Instagram reel on social media platform X, writing, “Forever our sister.”

Other beloved actors from the ’90s, like Full House’s Dave Coulier, shared their remembrances of Doherty. “RIP Shannen Doherty. I met her during the Full House days. She was lovely and had a beautiful smile,” posted Coulier on X. Star Trek star William Shatner sent condolences on X to Doherty’s loved ones, as well as to the families of Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Richard Simmons, who also passed away over the weekend. “A lot to take in for a weekend,” he wrote. Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross, who starred on 90210 spin-off Melrose Place, also paid tribute to Doherty on X, writing, “Shannen Doherty lived out her cancer battle publicly and with such courage. I will miss her fierce spirit.”

Clerks director and star Kevin Smith posted a long Instagram tribute to Doherty, who starred in his 1995 film, Mallrats. “Shannen was a true talent and she became a good friend, but lest anyone forget, she was the only reason Mallrats got green-lit in 1995,” wrote Smith. “That’s because Shannen was one of the most famous people on the planet - and the fact that she picked Mallrats as her first follow-up to 90210 *made* that movie happen. He also shared a short clip of himself appearing on Doherty’s podcast, Let’s Be Clear. “I miss you already, @DohertyShannen,” Smith added on X. “Thank you for going to the Mall with me that one time. And thank you for 30 years of a foundational friendship.”

Jason Priestley, who played Doherty’s character’s twin brother, Brandon Walsh, on 90210, shared his love for Doherty via Instagram: “Shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of my friend Shannen. She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family in this dark time.” Brian Austin Green, who played David Silver on 90210, put his tribute on his Instagram Stories: “Shan. My sister… ..You loved me through everything.”

Olivia Munn, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, also posted a long tribute to Doherty on Instagram, saying she was “absolutely heartbroken” by the news of Doherty’s passing. “When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer I remembered how she bravely let the world into her journey and I reached out to her,” wrote Munn. “We became instant friends- which I honestly couldn’t comprehend at times because watching her on ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ was everything to me when I was 10. (Shannen Doherty as Brenda Walsh is and was and will always be an icon.)”

Munn went on to write about their “shared battle” and the support she found in Doherty. “Cancer is really fucking scary and Shannen faced it with such dignity, strength and grace,” she wrote. “I’m sending all of my love to her mother who was her best friend, hero and champion every step of the way. Fly so high, my friend.”
