The final episode of BBC anthology series Inside No. 9 has now aired and viewers were left in tears. The show, which has been running since 2014, came to an end on Wednesday, June 12 after nine series with the final episode Plodding On.

Inside No. 9 is the brainchild of Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton, who have previously worked together on The League of Gentleman and Psychoville. What did you think of the last episode? Let us know in the comments.

The final episode looked back at the series as a whole, serving as somewhat of a 'greatest hits' of episodes. Several of the guest stars from previous series returned for the final episode, including Anne Reid and Tim Key.

In the episode Reece and Steve played versions of themselves and everything that happened was very meta. Steve told his partner that he was “sick” of Inside No. 9 and that the show was merely “little half-hour nothings, with every fourth one a dud”. Then, Reece called Steve his “only friend” in a particularly poignant moment.

Viewers have been enjoying Inside No. 9 since 2014

Following the episode viewers took to social media to share their thoughts with many people saying they were left feeling emotional. One person commented: “As a mahoosive on the buses fan, the ending of inside no. 9 has made my heart very very happy. it was exactly like the opening credits in the films. even the music sounded like on the buses. it was like on the buses mixed with tears of laughter.”

A second said: “Just watched The Last Inside No 9 and I'm in tears. So sad but really well put together. Well done. Loved it!” A third shared: “Anyone else in floods of tears after watching the last episode of Inside No 9? BRAVO BOYS!” A fourth echoed: “The perfect way to end the anthology to end all anthologies, Inside No. 9! Such a brilliantly creative programme that is a masterclass in everything TV and filmmaking.”

As to why Inside No. 9 is coming to an end, Steve previously told The Radio Times: "I don’t think we regret deciding to finish. Numerically, it’s our little in-joke – nine series of Inside No 9. It could easily have stopped after five series, but we were determined to get to that landmark."

Reece continued: "When the last episode is only available on iPlayer, then it really will feel like it’s concluded. There will be a sadness to it, but also massive relief that we’ve got to the end without compromising on the high bar we set ourselves. We’ve done 55 different stories now, and to have not repeated ourselves or started to wane feels like an achievement. We’re very proud."
