Description |
English: Midshipman Thomas Edward Tildesley (c. 1811-1862 ) Half-length, slightly to viewer's left but almost full-face in midshipman's uniform with the baldric of 1827-33. Tildesley was born in 1811 or 1812, the eldest son of Lieutenant Thomas Tildesley RN. He was appointed a first-class volunteer in the 'Protector', 2 guns, in 1830 but this was changed to the 'Wolf', 18 guns, in which he served until 1832. He is then supposed to have transferred to the 'Cruiser', 16 guns, but does not appear to have taken up the position and does not appear in the 1836-42 index of officers. At some point he emigrated to Canada since his death at 'Campbellford, Canada West' on 23 July 1862, aged 51, was listed in the 'Morning Post' of 25 August that year. This painting was received as a gift in 1958 through S. Hinds & Son of Walmer, Kent, one of the executors (presumably solicitors) of T.H. Tildesley, Esq. |

Notes | Production: 20th Century copy of 19th century original. [PvdM note 8/12: dating changed to follow 1961 Preliminary Oils Catalogue. There seems no reason to suppose this is a 20th-c. copy and where this idea came from is not clear here.] | |||||||||||
