Category Oosterwolde

Question

De category Oosterwolde verwijst in de beschrijving naar Idaarderadeel. In Friesland is maar een Oosterwolde in Ooststellingwerf. Dat kan een category-professional mogelijk veranderen. Trouwens is Ooststellingwerf niet als category beschikbaar.

Dat krijg je met die geografische categorieen die totaal zinloos zijn. Als je wil weten welke profielen aan een bepaalde locatie "hangen" moet je dat met WT+ opvragen.

Geboorte-, huwelijks- en overlijdenslocaties zijn basale gegevens die al in het profiel vastliggen. Die ook nog eens redundant als categorie noteren is extra werk en leidt vroeger of later tot gegevensconflicten. Nog los van het feit dat veel mensen het bestaan van categorieen niet kennen en ze dus nooit gebruikten en nog steeds niet. Daarmee is de populatie van categorie x doorgaans maar een kleine deelverzameling van alle profielen die locatie x bevatten. En tot slot: aan de populatie in een categorie kun je niet zien welke relatie de profielen daar hebben tot die locatie. Geboorte? Huwelijk? Overlijden? Stamkroeg?

Ter illustratie: de categorie Oosterwolde bevat 9 profielen, terwijl het aantal profielen met geboortelocatie Oosterwolde 358 bedraagt...

I've doubted if I would answer this post and how to do this in the best possibly way, without offending any one or any project. But my own, private, personal opinion is that I also have a problem with place related categorization, but even more with the fact that locations are being placed/named as they where in that period of time. I don't know if it is allowed to expres my opinion and maybe it's the wrong place or topic, but if you're searching for ancestors to my opinion it's not possible to find any archives in the "Zeventien Provinciën' or in the "Bataafse Republiek". If you want to help foreigners finding their ancestors, you could help them more with the current name and location in stead of the historical correct one. But again this is my own personal opinion. If anybody feels offended by this post, please don't, otherwise feel free to remove it. I've appologized at front and I just thought out loud .

First of all: it was not my intent to start a discussion about catigorization or the use of 'historical' names of the Netherlands. I am to new in Wikitree to discuss these themes. I only want wrong information about Oosterwolde to be connected with the wrong municipality. That's the reason why I made my message in Dutch.

Margreet: as a newbee in WT I am at least astonished about the naming of European countries - I stay to Nederland or Schweiz (my other country of activity. To add France as the country for people born in the Netherlands between 1810 and 1813 is really not helpful for finding genealogical sources.My very personal opinion.

I understand your message and I was maybe wrong (as mentioned in my post) to add my comment, but you've proofed exactly my point that the naming policy isn't helping much in finding the correct genealogical sources.

Ondanks mijn ernstige bezwaren tegen dit categoriegebruik heb ik de onjuiste beschrijving maar gecorrigeerd.

De categorie Ooststellingwerf bestaat inderdaad niet. Er zou besloten moeten worden op welk niveau categorieen aanwezig horen te zijn: op gemeente- of op plaatsniveau.

En als het dan toch moet (zucht) zou ik kiezen voor plaatsniveau. Niets zo veranderlijk als gemeentenamen. Idaarderadeel is bijvoorbeeld sinds 1984 onderdeel van de nieuwe gemeente Boornsterhem. En die is inmiddels al weer opgedeeld in Leeuwarden, Heerenveen, Súdwest-Fryslân en de nieuwe gemeente De Friese Meren.
