Arkansas Civil War List

Hello all, I found this newspaper list of Arkansans who served in the Civil War. Besides their name, it lists their unit. It is much too big for me to tackle alone. I thought I would share with anyone researching Arkansas and the Civil War.

Jimmy,

Perhaps we could create a space page around that list.  We could find some members to help with the project.

We did something similar with a former burial grounds in Louisiana. We worked from a newspaper clipping of the names who had been buried there. (the graveyard was now gone).

I read some of the article.  It appears to be a list of officers' names by unit.

I have not checked to see if any of the regiments already have ongoing space page projects. But it is possible some do.

Working from only a list of names will entail a lot of work to track down the persons. I've helped on a few such projects.

I would think any project along this line would best be broken down in to battle units (probably regiments). Then research the officers in that regiment to see if they already have profiles.
In some cases, especially with common names, it can be challenging to determine identities. However, knowing the unit can help by indicating where it was organized, which can help in the name search.

I discovered the list while searching for Colonel George W. Lemoyne. The fact that they are officers can make the search easier in some cases.

I like having breadcrumbs to follow and track down, and this list provides another valuable clue.
I did a quick word search and found the two men I was looking for, so I can confirm information for at least two of them.  Lieutenant Colonel (later Major) George W(ashington) Wells and Colonel Robert G(len) Shaver led units formed from men in Lawrence and Randolph Counties.  In fact, George Washington Wells' younger brothers served in Shaver's unit, and the younger Wells men were mustered on 19 July, 1862, surrendered in New Orleans on 26 May 1865 and paroled in Shreveport on 8 June, 1865.

That's a start.
Jimmy, Norman, you know we can do it!  The information is invaluable and must be saved on WikiTree.  It's a ton of typing, and I type like a rooster on speed.

The first section in - Officers - can be like Cypress Gove (list format): Name, appointment date

The next section - Field & General Officers, Troops - could be in table form by Battalion/Regiment.

Space Page Title: General Field Officers of Arkansas in the Confederacy

Jo,

I had in mind something like we did with Cypress Grove.

Since this article covers so many regiments, we need to check the existing space page projects so that we do not duplicate/overlap on what others have done (or may have in progress).

You can Jimmy and start with the project any time. I am tied up until June getting the June challenge ready. I'm writing biographies for Brevet Brigadier Generals to be included in that monthly challenge.

Keep me in the loop. I'll check in on progress when I can.
Space page started ...

Because this is a simple list, it shouldn't cause a problem with existing space pages. We could include the link to the page.

Also, I've found soldiers from Arkansas regiments. How to handle it?

Jo,

Looks like this project is off to a fast start. Can you add Jimmy as an additional manager of the space page? I'll let you two decide how to divide up duties.

As you are planning this out, if you see how we could use a monthly challenge to help (create profiles or whatever) let me know.
I added the newspaper clipping link under sources, so that we can refer back to it if needed.

Hi Jill, I've added your new space page to the Project Page laugh  Great Job.

The space page is looking good.  Great work!

I used http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/  It was easier for me to read. I have a few from 3AR Co E in.

And there is the Camp Butler page also.

Hi Jimmy, you might want to add the newspaper article to the Arkansas Resource Page.  I've added the space page to the Project Page with the other space pages.

Pam, the newspaper article is too dense to read as a profile image, so I added it as background.

The space page is open, so feel free to add some ornamentation to that rather long list.  Flags?
Hi Jo, I'll see what I can find, probably not today, but tomorrow.

My unit of interest is the Arkansas 27th.  What exactly are the goals of the moment?  Just to make sure these officers have profiles and link them on the space page?

Good question.  I had not thought about that. Perhaps Jimmy or Jo can give you a better idea of what all then envision for this project.
Anything you can add would be appreciated. Of course, we want to map as many as possible. The list is just a start, as it has a list of names we can work with.

But more to your question, if their name is not the page, after you verify they have a profile or have created one, you can add a link so others know that profile done. It would be best if you link them to the unit, they belong, so that we have it mapped.
