William was born in April 1890 in or about East Maitland in New South Wales in what was later to become Australia. He was the son of Tannatt David and Caroline Mallett.
Dr. William Edgeworth David served with the British army as regimental medical officer with the 6th Cameron Highlanders, winning the Military Cross. From a 4 page biography of his father in Sir Tannatt William Edgeworth David in the Sydney Mail newspaper of Wednesday 4 May 1921 we see mention of Williams military career below:
The son, Mr. William Edgeworth David, graduated in medicine at Sydney University, and volunteered in the first contingent. He was not able to get a position, but went with the troopship Shropshire as battalion medical officer, and then on to London and qualified, after which he got a position as regimental medical officer with the 6th Cameron Highlanders, with whom he was through the battle of Loos in 1915, and was through the fighting on the Somme, at the carrying of Vimy Ridge in 1917, and at the third battle of Ypres in July, 1917. He was badly wounded — almost fatally— by splinters of a large shell, which killed four officers who were looking at the same map with him. After being in hospital for about a year he made a complete recovery. He is now married, and in practice at Malden-on-Thames a suburb of London.
Dr. William Edgeworth David passed away in 1967 in Queensland and is buried in the Buderim Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, Buderim, Queensland.
