Biography

Frank Cotter Henderson OBE was born on 8th March 1911 in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of Angus Henderson and Eva Frost. [1]

He graduated from the University of Sydney with an agricultural science degree. In 1936 he moved to the Australian Mandated Territory of New Guinea and became an Agricultural Officer, initially working at Kerevat, before being transferred to Talasea.

Frank married Joyce Small in 1938 in Maclean, in New South Wales' Northern Rivers region. [2]

No.107 Squadron

Following the Japanese invasion in 1942, he helped evacuate civilians from Talasea to Cairns, in Far North Queensland. On 17th August 1942 Frank was commissiioned in the Royal Australian Air Force for service during the Second World War. He attained the rank of Flight Lieutenant. [3] He was posted to No.107 Squadron, conducting anti-submarine patrols off the Australian east coast during the last years of the war. [4] He resigned his commission following the war, on 22nd November 1945, returning to civilian life. [3]

Following the war he focused on the development of cocoa plantations. In 1951 he was appointed head of the Division of Plant Industry, moving to Port Moresby the following year. In 1958 he was appointed Director of Agriculture, Stock and Fisheries. In 1959 he was appointed to the Legislative Council of Papua and New Guinea and from 1964 to 1969 was elected to the House of Assembly of Papua and New Guinea. Frank was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours 1967 for his service as Assistant Administrator of Papua New Guinea. [5]

Aged 58 years, he passed away on 21st July 1969 in Port Moresby.
