Mungo Wentworth MacCallum was born on 21st December 1941 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was the only child of Mungo Ballardie MacCallum, grandson of Sir Mungo and Lady MacCallum, and Diana Wentworth, great granddaughter of noted explorer, journalist and politician, William Charles Wentworth. He was educated at the elite Cranbrook School.
After graduating from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts (BA), he became a political journalist and commentator.
Mungo married Jenny Garrett.
His parents divorced in 1971 and his father married again soon afterward.
During the 1980s he moved to Ocean Shores, on the north coast of New South Wales; where he continued to write political commentary, notably for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). He wrote several books, including:
Aged almost 79 years and having suffered from throat cancer, prostate cancer, and heart disease, he passed away on 9th December 2020 in Ocean Shores.
