Helsinki Mayor Jan Vapaavuori announced on Twitter Friday afternoon that he had received the resignation of film director Lauri Törhönen.
Törhönen, who had been accused by some 20 women of sexual harassment, will step down from his position as chair of the Cable Factory and Suvilahti arts and cultural centres.
According to Vapaavuori, the accused film director does not have the mandate to continue in his current role as chairman of the management company for the Cable Factory and Suvilahti arts and cultural centres.
The mayor said that efforts will be made to appoint a new chairman in the role within a week.
Helsinki deputy mayor responsible for culture and leisure, Nasima Razmyar had previously called for Törhönen to step down after Yle broke the news of sexual harassment allegations by 20 women against the former film professor on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Törhönen issued a terse statement in which he apologised to the persons he had harassed. However he said that he would not offer any public comment on the allegations.
