Finnish European Parliament members said they would support ramping up sanctions against Russia and Belarus, reports Uutissuomalainen following an email survey of Finnish MEPs by the local news conglomerate.
The majority of Finland’s European parliamentarians said they would greenlight new sanctions against Russia if the state were to be linked to opposition figure Alexei Navalny's poisoning.
Belarus has seen widespread protests since the 9 August presidential election, which secured a sixth term for Alexander Lukashenko, widely regarded as Europe's last dictator.
Of the Finnish MEPs, only Nils Torvalds (SPP) said he did not favour new sanctions as an effective tool against Belarus, arguing the Belarusian economy depended more on Russia than the EU.
Silvia Modig (Left) was the only Finnish MEP to not respond to the question about Russia.
