APN podcast: Waiting in the cold, voting rights and housing loans

This week's podcast asks why Migri is making people line up outside their offices for hours in frigid weather

Charles Mathies raised a storm this week when he tweeted about long lines of people waiting outside an immigration office in Helsinki.

The US researcher tells APN that Covid restrictions were poorly communicated, leaving many people standing in the cold for hours on end — with no guarantee that they would be able to attend to their business at the end of it.

Migri queues, voting issues and housing loans

We also looked at a new tool accessible at canivote.fi, created by students at TAMK and Aalto University that aims to help people find out whether they can vote in the upcoming local elections.

"As a minority, I think it's important for minorities to get involved in Finnish politics when we see so few minorities represented in Finnish media," said Aalto student Boeun Kim, who said she'd noticed an information gap among her social circle.

"I asked my friend group about this issue, and a lot of them didn't know that they were able to vote because it's not something that's advertised. You need to look into it."

We also looked at good news for first-time homebuyers, as Finland expands the scope of a savings and loan guarantee scheme.
