Slippery road conditions contributed to a nine-car pile-up on the Länsiväylä motorway in Helsinki on Monday morning.

In a tweet issued at 8.12 am, police said the pile-up took place in westbound lanes on the bridge between the Helsinki island districts of Lauttasaari and Salmisaari.

Police said the first call to emergency services about the accident came in at 7.54 am.

However, police announced at around 11.30 am that regular traffic on the motorway had resumed.

One person was taken to a local hospital for examination, but no further injuries were reported.

Four of the vehicles involved in the crash needed to be towed away, according to police, who added that the cause of the pile-up is being investigated.

Police warned that road conditions on the bridge continued to be very slippery.

According to the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) website, "if so required by weather or road surface conditions, winter tyres must be used from 1 November to 31 March".
