Sonera to Shed 200 Jobs

Telecommunications operator TeliaSonera Finland has launched consultative talks on job cuts. Up to 200 employees could be laid off, but Sonera says that it will find many of them new positions within the company.

Sonera says it aims to increase long-term competitiveness and improve operations in broadband and business services.

“The net number of those laid off will be under 200, because new jobs are opening. At this stage, however, we’re not going to assess how many people will be laid off,” says Managing Director Juha-Pekka Weckström.

Additionally, Sonera has stated that it plans to close the customer service unit at Vaajakoski and shift the unit’s tasks to Turku and Lahti. Some of the operations of the service unit at Lappeenranta are also to be moved to Lahti.

“Unit operations therefore remain, but they will be centralised,” Weckström explains.

Sonera first revealed plans for staff reductions at the beginning of February. In Sweden, over 600 of the company’s employees might get the boot.

TeliaSonera is one of Europe’s biggest telecoms operators. Earlier this month, it reported fourth-quarter profits of 1.4 billion dollars and said that it expects a 4 percent growth in sales in 2011.
