Rights Group Calls for Halt to Police Stun Gun Use

The Finnish branch of Amnesty International is calling on police to halt use of the Taser stun gun pending further tests.

The human rights group says that more than 70 deaths have been linked to the law enforcement weapon in North America.

Amnesty is calling for an independent study of its effects. Police in Vantaa, Jyväskylä and Oulu are using the stun gun on an experimental basis.

The US manufacturer insists the "non-lethal energy device" has never caused a death.

A blast from a Taser sends a fish-hook-like device into the suspect's body which provides an electric shock of 50,000 volts, causing intense pain and temporary paralysis.
