Farmers' Union Appeals for Farm Income

The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners, or MTK, has appealed to the government on behalf of measures to promote farm income. MTK Chairman Esa Härmälä says that statistics indicate that the average wage of Finnish farmers has dropped to four euros an hour. Härmälä notes that industrial workers earn four times as much.

The farmers' union also notes that the costs of farming have increased by nearly 14 percent since 1995. The rising costs of energy, machinery, and construction have hit Finnish farmers especially hard, while changes in EU agricultural policy have pushed producer prices down.

The organisation has called on the Finnish Government to increase Finnish national agricultural subsidies, and to take measures to improve the social benefits of farmers.

The MTK and the Government are scheduled to discuss the issue of farm income on Thursday. About 300 farmers from around Finland are expected to take part in a demonstration scheduled for the same day.
