Minelayer Pohjanmaa Reaches Home

The Finnish minelayer Pohjanmaa returned to Finland on Monday, having completed its participation in the EU anti-piracy operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia.

The Pohjanmaa set sail on January 5. The 35-year-old vessel covered some 26,000 nautical miles per month without any technical problems. The ship spent 65 days at sea.

The vessel’s aim was to protect UN World Food Programme vessels delivering provisions to Somalia. In addition, it provided protection for ships in the area against attack by pirates.

The crew of the Pohjanmaa captured a suspected pirate ship in the Arabian Sea and sank it. However, the ship later released the suspected pirates, since no country wanted to take responsibility for prosecuting them.

Dozens of relatives and pouring rain greeted the returning vessel's crew at Kirkkonummi's Upinniemi naval base on Monday.
