Finnish diplomat in high-profile UN job in Libya

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Finnish diplomat Georg Charpentier as Deputy Special Representative in Libya. Briton Ian Martin will head the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and serve as the Special Representative.

Charpentier, born in 1956 in El Salvador, has enjoyed a long UN career, including numerous postings in Africa. Before the Libyan appointment, he worked as the Deputy Special Representative for Sudan.

Charpentier graduated from the University of Helsinki with a Master’s degree in economics in 1981. According to his UN biography, he speaks seven languages.
