Foreign Minister Critical of Russian-German Pipeline Plan

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb has criticised Germany and Russia for their handling of the planned Baltic Sea gas pipeline. He says their initial preparations for the project undermined EU unity and got the venture off on the wrong foot.

In an interview with YLE, Stubb called on the EU to focus its common energy policy.

Stubb says that Germany and Russia failed to consult with the EU when planning the 1200-kilometre Nord Stream pipeline, which would largely be built within the territory of EU countries, including Finland, Poland and the three Baltic states.

"Perhaps this demonstrates that the EU really needs a unified energy policy so that this kind of decision can be made jointly," he said.

Stubb called for new energy sources and alternative gas pipeline routes.

The Finnish government is to decide in September or October whether to approve the Nord Stream pipe's routing through Finnish territorial waters. Finnish environmental authorities will also decide separately on whether to grant construction permission.
