Stubb: "Hands off Solidium"

European Affairs and Foreign Trade minister Alexander Stubb says politicians should not interfere with the state-owned investment company Solidium. Stubb was responding to statements made by government ownership minister Pekka Haavisto, who called for a review of the portfolio and role of the state investor.

Speaking on Yle's Saturday morning discussion programme Ykkösaamu, Stubb said took the opportunity to counter recent statements made by his colleague Pekka Haavisto.

"I believe it would be most useful for politicians to keep their hands off Solidium. There's no point in meddling in a business whose goal is to safeguard strategic Finnish ownership and to increase profits -- so politicians are involved in some way," Stubb declared.

On Friday minister with responsibility for state ownership and steering Pekka Haavisto said that he's ready to reconsider the role of the government's investment company Solidium.

Stubb, who recently declared his candidacy for European Parliament elections, said that his role is to marker Finnish enterprises on export trade missions, and not to engage in operational decision making.

"Politics is rather sensitive to economic trends, while the economy and Solidium’s operations are based on economic analysis," he added.

Stubb said that Solidium should continue on a policy-driven path.

"We should remember that the government has minority ownership in these businesses," he noted, adding that Solidium's most important task is to coordinate government ownership in enterprise.
