Ministry of Defence: US asks for help in fighting ISIS

The request for Finland's help in fighting the extremist militant group was mediated through the American Embassy in Helsinki.

Deputy Director General Timo Kantola from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirmed that American officials have asked Finland for help in fighting ISIS.

”The topic of a coalition against Syria, Iraq and Isis has been presented to Finland. The request came from the US Embassy,” said Kantola late Tuesday.

According to Swedish media sources, Sweden’s Minister of Defence Peter Hultqvist has also received a similar request to support the US in its fight against ISIS. According to Swedish tabloid Expressen, Hultqvist received a query regarding the matter from US Secretary of Defence Ashton B. Carter.

The American request for help from Finland was first reported by Ilta-Sanomat.
