On Friday, President Alexander Stubb held phone conversations with Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and UN Secretary General António Guterres, the president’s office said.

It said that Stubb and Stoltenberg discussed an array of issues including the status of Finland's Nato integration and preparations for the Nato summit in Washington in July. Stubb and Stoltenberg also discussed the need to continue providing support for Ukraine.

In a symbolic move, Stubb’s first foreign visit after taking office two weeks ago was to observe Nato-led military exercises in Stoltenberg’s native Norway. The manoeuvres also included Sweden, which finally joined the four other Nordic states in Nato last week.

Stubb also held a phone conversation with UN Secretary General António Guterres on Friday. The president's office said that this discussion focused on Russia's attack on Ukraine, the situation in Gaza and the global geopolitical situation as well as Finland's strong commitment to UN activities.

Earlier on Friday, Stubb discussed the security situation on the eastern border with the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy ahead of a government press conference laying out a stricter border policy plan.
