Drownings claimed five lives over Midsummer. Two people drowned in Kristiinankaupunki, one in Porvoo, one in Naantali and one in Satakunta.

On Sunday, a man born in 1955, previously reported missing, was found drowned in Lake Jämijärvi in Satakunta. Police said the local man had been out on a boat when he fell overboard.

The Ostrobothnia police department meanwhile reported that a woman was found dead on Saturday near the shore in Kristiinankaupunki after going for a post-sauna swim. The woman's death marked the second water fatality in the town, as a man who went swimming in Kristiinankaupunki on Friday was later found drowned.

Saturday also saw a water fatality in Naantali, where a woman born in 1985 drowned near the shore of a cottage, according to the Southwestern Finland police department.

Police in Porvoo also reported a drowning death on Saturday, Midsummer Day.

An average of six people have drowned every Midsummer in Finland over the past decade, according to the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation (SUH).

There are around 100–150 accidental drownings in Finland every year, about half of them during the summer months, according to SUH. Almost half of those who drown are intoxicated.

Typically, drownings occur while swimming or playing in the water, when maneuvering a rowboat, or after falling from a dock. This often happens when alone in or on familiar waters.
