Finland's political leaders reacted with shock and condemnation after an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump.

The former US President was injured in the ear after shots were fired from a nearby roof while he was giving a speech at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

A statement published by the Republican National Convention said that Trump was 'doing well', though two others appear to be injured and another is fatally wounded from the attack.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb took to the social media site X (formerly Twitter) to express his shock at the event.

"I strongly condemn this and any act of violence," Stubb said on the website.

Stubb spent last week in the US capital Washington DC attending a Nato summit marking the alliance's 75th anniversary.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) joined Stubb in condemning political violence on X.

"Political violence is never acceptable in democratic societies. I wish [Trump] a speedy recovery. My condolences to the families and friends of the victims," Orpo wrote in his post.

Finland's Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen (NCP) also condemned the political violence on the social media site, saying she was "saddened" by the attack.

Minister of Finance Riikka Purra (Finns) also commented on the attack in a post on X. She said it was fortunate that the assassination attempt against Trump failed. She added that political violence will further divide the US.

Newly-elected MEP Li Andersson, the outgoing chair of the opposition Left Alliance, emphasised that political violence is unacceptable, no matter how much you disagree with the politics. She said that the right to participate in politics in peace and safety is in everyone's interest.

Mika Aaltola (NCP), another newly-elected MEP and former Finnish presidential candidate, wrote on the website that there is no justification for political violence. He added that Trump's assassination attempt will easily sow more violence.
