Finland's President Alexander Stubb says that if it was up to him, there would be no Russian or Belarussian athletes at the Olympics.

Russia has been banned from competing at the Olympics since 2017, first due to a state-sponsored doping scandal and subsequently because of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Athletes have competed as representatives of the Russian Olympic Committee in 2020 and at the 2022 winter games, and in Paris Russian athletes are designated as "Individual Neutral Athletes".

Speaking to Yle in Paris on Saturday, Stubb said that he finds these workarounds unsatisfactory.

"If I could decide myself, there would not be a single Russian or Belarussian athlete as a punishment for the fact that Russia is at this moment flagrantly flouting international law," said Stubb.

He did add that the presence of Russian athletes at the games might help Russians understand their country's isolation a little better, however.

Stubb also commented on a drone attack in north-west Russia, around 200km from the Finnish border, which was claimed by Ukraine.

The attack hit an airbase near Murmansk.

Stubb said that the situation was under control and Finland was following developments, but Finland had to get used to the idea of there being a war near the border.

Stubb said he was hoping for Finnish medals at the Olympics, with the sailing and judo teams particular hopes for success.

A keen triathlete himself, he had just met athletes at the Olympic village in Paris, and said he had discussed the psychological side of sport with team members.

On Sunday he plans to support Finns competing in the judo and swimming events, with Luukas Saha competing in the judo and Ida Hulkko in the swimming.
