Members of Finland's coast guard, are set to participate in a major maritime operation in the Baltic Sea, as part of a coordinated effort by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).

The operation, which will run from 14 August to 30 October, aims to enhance regional cooperation and strengthen maritime security across one of the world's busiest sea regions, according to the Finnish Border Guard.

This Multipurpose Maritime Operation (MMO) will involve a series of coordinated law enforcement drills, including conducting border surveillance, managing oil spills, carrying out rescue operations as well as monitoring fishing and maritime traffic.

The operation strives to integrate EU agency services, such as the use of satellites and unmanned aerial systems (RPAS) for maritime surveillance, into the capabilities of national coast guards.

The operation will also include the participation of experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom), the Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre), and the Government of Åland.

Other EU countries taking part include Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) will also contribute.
