Police have finished their investigation into the attempted murder of Finns Party official Pekka Kataja at his home in July last year.

Two men are suspected of the attack, including Jyväskylä city councillor Teemu Torssonen, who denies involvement. He had been elected to the council on the Finns Party ticket in 2017, but was expelled from the party in 2019.

The other man chaired Torssonen's aborted campaign for parliament in 2019, and is also suspected of aggravated firearms offences.

"The preliminary investigation has been conducted in a thorough way since July, and the police view on the chain of events and motives is in the report," said Jussi Luoto of the National Bureau of Investigation. "Now the whole thing will move forward to the western Finland prosecutors' office."

The prosecutor now has until 9 February to bring formal charges. Kataja is the Finns Party's elections chief in Central Finland, and the special advisor to MP Jouni Kotiaho.

The defence contends that Torssonen was not present during the attack, and has a cast-iron alibi. The police agree, but he remains a suspect. Under Finnish law someone who incites a crime can be convicted of the same offence as the perpetrator.
