Beau Sejour pool hit by shortage of lifeguards

A LIFEGUARD shortage has meant Beau Sejour swimming pool will close on a number of days over the coming weeks.

While some days the main pool will be closed entirely for a portion of the day, there will be occasions that the pool remains open, but only lane swimming will be permitted.

‘We are being hit by staff shortages like many other sectors,’ said a centre spokesman.

‘Specifically we are short on lifeguards, and that impacts on our ability to open our pools and in some instances our centre to the public.

‘Consequently, at times over the next month there are a few occasions where the centre will be closed or times when the main pool will only be open for lane swimming.’

It is hoped that a lifeguard course can be put on in October to help boost the number of lifeguards available.

‘We would encourage anyone looking for a career change, or maybe someone who is retired who is happy to take up the course, and may wish to fulfil some part-time hours, to get in touch.’

The issue has also been seen across the UK and the US, where a lack of certification programs has been worsened by the pandemic.

A full list of opening times for the centre and the pool can be found on the Beau Sejour Facebook page.

Among the dates affected is the August Bank Holiday weekend, when the pool will be closing early.
