These three join Austin Abrams, who will play the title role of Vernon, a teenager whose life goes to hell when his best friend shoots up a bunch of their classmates. Who wants to see the trailer for a killer mermaid movie? -- Video

16 minutes ago | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

The killer mermaid genre is not quite as slender as you might imagine (and we’re not even counting the controversial alternative ending to Splash in which a bloodlust-crazed Daryl Hannah beheads Tom Hanks with her tail). But it certainly isn’t large enough for us to ignore the appearance of a clip for Epic Pictures’ new horror film Nymph, about two young women who go on a Mediterranean vacation and uncover the watery lair of a killer mermaid beneath an abandoned military fortress.

A killer mermaid? A watery lair? Other things? What’s not to love!

Gravity Becomes The Third Film In History To Make More Than $100 Million From IMAX

18 minutes ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Alfonso Cuaron's beautiful and impressive epic Gravity has been making headlines ever since it debuted on the fall film festival circuit last year, but today it has yet another milestone to add to its incredible list of achievements. IMAX has announced that the sci-fi thriller has become only the third movie ever to make more than $100 million at IMAX theaters alone, joining James Cameron's Avatar and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Looking at the figures, it's not hard to see how Gravity accomplished this feat. Since being released theatrically last October, Variety says the film has made nearly $700 million worldwide, and it also happens to be a spectacle that truly demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible. What's especially significant about the achievement, however, is that both Avatar and The Dark Knight Rises made more than $1 billion at the global box office, meaning that »

No ‘Independence Day’ Sequel For Will Smith

25 minutes ago | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Exclusive: After spending several years looking to generate a sequel or two to the 1996 Fox smash hit Independence Day, it looks like director Roland Emmerich and co-writer and producer Dean Devlin are going to have to take on those earth leveling aliens without Will Smith. I’m told reliably that Smith informed the studio that he won’t be joining in on a sequel that the filmmakers hope to have in theaters for July 4 weekend, 2016. That marks the 20th anniversary of the 1996 original that grossed $811 million worldwide and launched Smith on a trajectory to become the world’s most bankable movie star. Now, this doesn’t mean that the ID4 sequel can’t happen. In fact, Fox is very keen to see it through and what studio wouldn’t want another installment of such a big movie? When Emmerich and Devlin wrote the first draft before handing it over to Amazing Spider-Man scribe James Vanderbilt, »

Jesse Owens Biopic Gets Boost From Family

36 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The daughter of Olympic athlete Jesse Owens, Marlene Owens Rankin, was at the Berlin Olympic Stadium on Thursday to attend the international sales launch of “Race,” the biopic about her father. Variety spoke to her and Stephen Hopkins, the director of the film, whose cast has just been joined by Jeremy Irons and Geoffrey Rush.

Owens Rankin, sitting yards from the spot where Adolf Hitler watched the 1936 Olympics in which Owens won four gold medals, said the film can deliver an uplifting message to young moviegoers.

“The message it can deliver is about the human spirit — about its endurance and vulnerability — but also the success you can achieve when you are motivated, and persevere in the face of adversity,” she said. “So, hopefully, kids who are underachieving and who lack hope will be motivated by his life and successes in spite of all he went through.”

Watch a 3 Minute Red-Band Trailer for David Ayer’s Sabotage Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sam Worthington

41 minutes ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Open Road Films has released a great looking three minute red-band trailer for director David Ayer's (writer of Training Day/director of End of Watch) new film Sabotage.  Based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel And Then There Were None, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  While I was already excited for the project due to Ayer directing, this trailer makes the film look even better than I expected.  It's also a lot bloodier than anything Schwarzenegger has done in many years.  It's a great surprise. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Sam WorthingtonOlivia WilliamsMireille EnosHarold PerrineauTerrence HowardJoe ManganielloMax MartiniJosh Holloway, and Kevin Vance.  Sabotage opens March 28th. Cate Blanchett Caught in the Woody Allen Crossfire

42 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With Oscar voting scheduled to begin next Friday, the 1992 molestation charges against “Blue Jasmine” director Woody Allen couldn’t have resurfaced at a worse time.

The Sony Classics feature is nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actress (Cate Blanchett), Original Screenplay (Allen) and Best Supporting Actress (Sally Hawkins), leaving several pundits asking whether awards voters will opt against the accused filmmaker and his leading ladies. The short answer? Probably not. Still, the Woody Allen controversy underlines the fact that Hollywood awards, and the ensuing global attention, can push a lot of buttons and stir up discussions that can be enlightening, distressing, or both.

Considering the claims of molestation, questions about something like an Academy Award may seem trivial and disrespectful. But in fact, awards have been a key element of this week’s discussion as 28-year-old Dylan Farrow, in her open letter published by the N.Y. Times, addressed »

Why 'Transparent' Creator Jill Soloway Feels the Amazon Pilot Process is 'Revolutionary'

54 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Before she made her directorial debut with "Afternoon Delight," which starred Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple and Josh Radnor and premiered at Sundance last year, Jill Soloway worked in television as a writer and producer on series like "United States of Tara" (for which she was showrunner) and "Six Feet Under" (which netted her three Emmy nominations). Now she's back working on the small screen, albeit in a new form -- she's the creator of "Transparent," one of 10 new original series pilots Amazon premiered on February 6th. A half-hour comedy, "Transparent" is the story of a Los Angeles family -- the divorced parents played by Jeffrey Tambor and Judith Light, with Jay DuplassGaby Hoffmann and Amy Landecker as their grown children. Warm but sharp-edged in its dialogue, "Transparent" is easily the best of the new pilots -- you can watch it online here. Indiewire caught up with Soloway by phone »

New Details on Vision’s Costume Design in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age Of Ultron

They say a picture is worth a thousand words ... but since we don't have a picture of Vision's costume in Joss Whedon's The Avengers: Age of Ultron, then words will just have to do.  Less than a day ago, we reported that Paul Bettany - who has voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. in each of the three Iron Man movies and the first Avengers - will star as Vision in the sequel.  While plot details surrounding Bettany's transition from A.I. voice to a full-bodied android remain a mystery, it looks like we may have a description of Vision's costume.  Hit the jump to find out more. News of Vision's costume comes courtesy of ScreenRant (via Comic Book Therapy).  The following description is squarely in the rumor column at this point, but the source is said to have insider access to the wardrobe department at Pinewood-Shepperton Studios »

Congrats to 'Black Hat,' January's Project of the Month!

59 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Congratulations to "Black Hat" writer-director Robbie Bryan! The project received the most votes to win January's Project of the Month. The prize is a consultation from our Project of the Month partner, Tribeca Film Institute. Here's a look at the film's pitch: "Dandi Chiapetta" is an alternative teen who is into everything anime and the band Slipknot. Bullied for her love of this art form, she still has a dream. To get to a convention halfway across the country where her favorite anime Director, Shinichiro Watanabe, is going to turn one amateur manga comic into an anime. When all else fails, she "kidnaps" her estranged grandfather, in a nursing home, and races to get to the convention in time. Judging by our Fb page, which has over 228,000 "likes" already, worldwide, this film and subject matter has huge potential. Spring of King - That is, Stephen King

1 hour ago | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

It’s still mid-February, and the East Coast of America is caught somewhere between Winter Storm Maximus and Winter Storm Niko, neither of which proved to be the Storm of the Century.  The official first day of spring is over a month away; in the snowy doldrums of late winter, March 20th has never seemed further away.  Yet the readers among us, trapped inside due to office closings and school closings and sick days, seem to sense a different sort of storm on the horizon.  Stephen King’s novel, Doctor Sleep, remains a presence on the hardcover New York Times bestseller list, a full eighteen weeks after it debuted at #1 – a stunning success for a chart that seems to showcase King books briefly, then spit them out.  This is an auspicious omen: despite the snow and the subzero temperatures, it feels as if the Spring of King has already begun. »

Watch: The Red Band Trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Sabotage' Earns Its Red and Then Some

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Arnold Schwarzenegger continues his comeback with his latest action pic, "Sabotage." "Sabotage" is written by Skip Woods and David Ayer ("Training Day," "End of Watch"), and directed by the latter. Sam Worthington and Terrence Howard hold supporting roles as Schwarzenegger leads a team of highly skilled DEA agents who slowly get picked off, one by one, after the $10 million dollar fortune they acquired in a drug bust goes missing. The red band trailer earns it's red and then some. There's enough violence to satisfy even the most shameless action geek, especially in one satisfying clip of a guy in a trailer stuck on the train tracks as the train speeds towards him. Schwarzenegger delivers his one liners with class and eloquence as he tears through the cartel to find out where his wife is, and who's responsible for killing his men. "Sabotage" is being distributed by Open Road and Qed International. »

Jake Johnson And Zoe Kazan Find Love In The Pretty One Trailer And Clips

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The feature directorial debut of writer-director Jenee Marque, The Pretty One is a romantic comedy unlike any you've seen before. It centers on Laurel, a self-defeating introvert who is given a second shot at an exciting life when she accidentally assumes the identity of her recently deceased twin. With a plotline that dark, The Pretty One seems a hard sell. But this story of self-discovery is surprisingly endearing and delightful. Or, as I'm quoted in the above trailer, it's "daring, original, and thoroughly funny." Zoe Kazan fronts The Pretty One as identical twins Laurel and Audrey. While Laurel is a wallflower who has never moved away from home, Audrey is a thrill-seeker living a flashy and fashionable life in the big city. But when the car accident tipped up top brings Audrey's life to an abrupt end, there's a mistaken identity issue that assumes Laurel was the one who died. »

Berlin Review: '71' Starring Jack O’Connell An Outstanding, Bloody, Meditation On The Personal Cost Of Conflict

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While the odds of seeing two truly extraordinary, brutal but brilliant British films in as many weeks are fairly long, the chances of both films starring the same relative unknown, in two similarly impressive yet fundamentally different performances, must be exponentially smaller. But we should buy a lottery ticket, because in the wake of David Mackenzie’s tremendous “Starred Up” (review here), a new film from debut feature director Yann Demange has had its world premiere here at the Berlin Film Festival. And it also places at its moral, physical and psychological center a role for Jack O’Connell, the rising star who knocked us sideways in the former film, and did it all over again here. But “‘71” is more than just a performance showcase, delivering a gripping, at times almost unbearably tense, incredibly involving anti-war statement, made the stronger for being set against the less cinematically familiar backdrop of Belfast, »

Women in Horror Month Profile: Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein'

1 hour ago | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

In addition to being Black History Month, February is also recently known as Women in Horror Month. Throughout the history of horror, numerous women have published works that have won fans and a place in the literary world, but too often they are overlooked in the larger scheme of things.    Mary Shelley is probably one of the most famous female authors of the genre. Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus is a work on par with other horror gems such as Bram Stoker's Dracula, and it has spawned numerous movies and other adaptations. While it is also considered a science fiction story, one can't overlook the horror elements.    What started as a friendly competition between peers to make a chilling story turned into an iconic vision. Frankenstein's monster has, throughout the years, become a symbol of the quintessential lost, potentially dangerous but also misunderstood being, struggling to find a place in the world. »
