#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
ONCE UPON A BROKEN HEART marks the launch of a new series from Stephanie Garber about love, curses, and the lengths that people will go to for happily ever after
For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in true love and happy endings . . . until she learns that the love of her life will marry another.
Desperate to stop the wedding and to heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic, but wicked, Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.
But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game ― and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy.

An Indie Next pick
“An explosively rich fairy tale that takes place inside an intricate world that’s weaved with fast-paced plot and intriguing twists. Garber continues to show up with lush, atmospheric writing and charming characters that we can’t help but want to journey with until their final scene.” ―BuzzFeed.com
“A magical confectionery mix of love, messy choices, and dreams of happy endings . . . There are lots full of great options for fantasy lovers, but Once Upon a Broken Heart is one of the most appealing, thanks to its constantly churning plot, its real sense of adventure, and the lovely heroine at the center of the story. Here’s to seeing where Evangeline’s journey takes her next!” ―Culturess.com
“A sugar-crusted, poison-spiked romp through a vibrant world of fairy tale intrigue, tangled romance, and forbidden magic.” ―Cassandra Clare
“Shimmering with magic, Once Upon a Broken Heart is a wondrous story about my favorite thing: kissing. Not only is Jacks the swoony villain you’ve always dreamed about, but the decadent world will leave you breathless.” ―Isabel Ibañez
'“Enchanting, intriguing, and delightfully whimsical, Once Upon a Broken Heart grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go. Evangeline is a cunning heroine, and Jacks never stopped surprising me. I couldn’t put it down.” ―Brigid Kemmerer
“It’s hard not to be enchanted by any tale Stephanie Garber chooses to write, with her masterful storytelling and her infuriating way of fooling with our pulse rates. A guileless, heartbroken heroine plays with fate incarnate―the bad boy Jacks―in the dreamy, topsy-turvy world of the Magnificent North. Once Upon a Broken Heart casts a spell that you won't soon want to be broken.” ―Stacey Lee
“A wildly imaginative, romantic story where true love and deadly kisses collide and bargains with the Prince of Hearts come with a steep price. Once Upon A Broken Heart is an unputdownable fairy tale where Garber’s imagination sparkles like the magnificent North. Readers will delight in each whimsical and thrilling page.” ―Kerri Maniscalco
“A dazzling mix of mystery, romance, and magic.” ―Karen M. McManus
“Once Upon a Broken Heart confirms that Stephanie Garber is the queen of fairy tales. I stepped into her world and got happily lost in the delicious magic, deceit, and passion.” ―Mary E. Pearson
“The lush worldbuilding Garber is known for is on full display here. . . . The ending is a clear setup for a sequel, but no one will be complaining about the opportunity to revisit this intricately imagined world.” ―SLJ, starred review
“Garber enchants readers with exquisitely imagined worldbuilding and her trademark heady romance.” ―Publishers Weekly
“Garber, best known for her lush and poetic Caraval series, will no doubt have readers flocking to this new series. The potential for coming installments is huge, as the glimmers of a larger world introduced in this volume are sure to stoke reader curiosity.” ―Booklist
“A lushly written story with an intriguing heart.” ―Kirkus Reviews
“A sparkling story filled with adventure, broken hearts, and magic as one girl learns she’s capable of more than she could have imagined. . . . If I had to pick a defining heroine for 2021, it would be Evangeline Fox.” ―MissPrint.com

This YA Fantasy is Book 3 in the Once Upon A Broken Heart series. This book is the conclusion of the romance between the MCs. This book continues where book 2 left off. These books are not meant to be read as stand alones.
Then romance is a slow build, longing, and forgotten love.
The spice is very very mild which is to be expected with this book genre.
The book moves at a fairly quick pace. It follows the FMC to get her memories back, and fight for true love.
The world building is absolutely fantastic, as it is in the previous books. Continuing on in the Northern kingdom where book 2 left off. The world is complex, but easily imagined.
This book offers new insights to characters from previous books. Giving us a clear view of their motives, and whether they are villain’s or hero’s. The characters have growth in their personalities becoming more complex as the story goes on.
Stephanie Garber returns to the magic world of Caraval with a brand new story, Once Upon A Broken Heart. As we all know by now, this story will involve our favorite Fate, Jacks, and new heroine Evangeline. This story takes place after the events of Finale, so new readers can happily read this one without prior knowledge of the original series, but as a fan of the series, I’d still recommend them!
As you probably know by now I am HUGE fan of Stephanie Garber's Caraval series! Returning to this world was a little like returning home. There is just something so magically wonderful about this series, I can't really explain it in words at times. There's just this happy feeling I get when I am reading the words and living the story with Evangeline! This story held me captivated from the very first lines and didn't let me go until I closed the back cover.
We open the story to meeting Evangeline in a state of tears. She had officially became an orphan and now her stepsister was marrying the boy she loves most. She is willing to make a deal with the Prince of Hearts in order to stop the wedding, but of course any deal with Jacks isn’t going to turn out well for anyone other than Jacks. Jacks agrees to her request, but she must kiss three people of his choosing when and where he tells her and Evangeline agrees to his terms. When Evangeline sees the results of her wish come true, and sees her beloved, stepsister and the entire wedding party turned into stone, she takes their place and frees them.
Evangeline wakes up six weeks later with the help of the Fate, Poison, and sees that a lot of things have changed in that time. Luc, her beloved was injured once again and sequestered himself off to heal and refuses to see her or even her stepsister, Marisol. Evangeline and Marisol have a fragile relationship. Evangeline has a somewhat trusting nature and doesn’t believe that Marisol did anything to actually hurt Evangeline, she believes that was more her stepmother’s ideas.
We do get a happy encounter with Evangeline meeting Scarlett and Donatella, no boys sadly. Scarlett was amazed to hear about Evangeline’s sacrifice. She wants Evangeline to attend the Nocte Neverending, a celebration of sorts where the prince in the north, Apollo, will try to find a bride at a series of balls. Evangeline asks for Marisol to join her, for she feels sorry for his stepsister and the way her mother treats her and with what the gossip columns have been saying about her.
Then naturally at the first ball, Evangeline runs into Jacks. The moody, post-Finale Jacks…who now has blue hair! I was a bit curious about the how and why of the color change but since it’s Evangeline’s point of view, we don’t really get that reason. It’s safe to say it was due to what he went through after Finale. Jacks tells her she has to kiss the prince, Apollo. Doesn’t tell her why and Evangeline has no choice but to do it or else, she’ll die. Her kiss magically makes Apollo fall in love with her and Evangeline can’t help but fall a little for him too.
The story really takes off when murder comes into play and Evangeline is the number one suspect and when her life is on the line, Jacks is the one to be there for her. Surprising, yes? The story then evolves more into Jacks’ possible plans. We get an inkling of what he’s after, we know what he’s willing to do to get it, but he still don’t really know what he wants it for.
Stephanie Garber really amps up the magic in this story and I was all for it! There’s talks of fairy tales we have yet to know and how Evangeline was raised on her mother’s stories. There’s also just a very fairy tale like feel in the air of this one from the balls and fancy dresses to even Evangeline’s pink hair! What made this one even more exciting for me was my favorite kind of character popped into this story! If you know Stephanie and how she came to create Jacks, it’s related to that! Otherwise I will leave even that minute detail a surprise for you.
Once Upon A Broken Heart was filled with surprises at every turn! Just when you think things are running smoothly, she shakes things up with a shocking character reveal or a startling backstory. I’m eager to learn more about Jacks and his plans and oh how I wish we could get his point of view! Not only because he was somewhat villainous but because he is such a complex character! You never know what he’s going to do next. Yes, he’s a liar and manipulative and self-serving, but I still think there’s something more to that guy! It’s amazing how one can love the most deplorable characters in books! Despite his dark intentions…I still think he’s going to surprise us in the next book!
Fans of Caraval will rave over this one and it’s a perfect read for fans of fantasies and fairy tales. It’s the right blend of magic and danger. This is a book I ended up cherishing from beginning to end! I loved returning to this magical world, if on the other side of town. Once Upon A Broken Heart will sweep you away into a magical world alongside ours where just about anything is possible!
Overall Rating 5/5 stars
Here is my reflection with 0 spoilers…
This was a slow start, not in the sense of activity but more so in the sense of relatability. I appreciated the character development which continued me further. However, my initial impression of the female lead was pathetic, weak, lame, exhausting. She stayed that way for a good part of the book, it was hard to not give up at some points because she annoyed me that much. But, I remained hopeful.
Finally, I found myself enjoying the relationships and the story line. There is creativity and thought in the plot that makes you need to know what happens next. I was 60% through when I couldn’t put the book down and had to reach the conclusion. I can even say the lead female has grown on me. I’m anxious to purchase the second book and hoping it continues making Evangeline a more complex character.
