Travellers from Ancient Greece, exploring the empires that surrounded the Mediterranean, took note of the spectacular sights they saw.

It is from their writings, that a list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was complied.

They are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Of these, only the Great Pyramid of Giza remains standing.

In 2007, a worldwide poll was held to decide which incredible monuments should make it into a new, updated list.

After 100 million votes were cast it was announced that the New Seven Wonders of the World are the Great Wall of China, Chichén Itzá, Petra, Machu Picchu, Christ the Redeemer, the Colosseum and the Taj Mahal. The Great Pyramid of Giza was also given an honorary mention.
