Endometriosis: BBC reporter reveals excruciating 12-year diagnosis wait

A BBC reporter has described her struggle with endometriosis, saying she had to give up running because "it felt as if my insides were going to fall out".

Heledd Roberts was 14 when she first saw a doctor about the excruciating daily pains but did not get a diagnosis until she paid for a private consultation at 26.

Scans showed signs of endometriosis, she said, explaining how she then paid for the surgery she needed after being told the wait on the NHS would be another six and a half years.

The average wait time for a diagnosis in Wales is now nearly ten years, according to research by Endometriosis UK.

Heledd said her "heart breaks" for those unable for afford private treatment.

The Welsh government said it knew there was "room for improvement".
