Manchester United: Tyrell Malacia joins on four-year deal from Feyenoord

Manchester United have signed full-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord on a four-year contract until June 2026, with the option of a further year.

The Netherlands international, 22, will cost 15m (£13m) euros with a further 2m (£1.7m) euros in add-ons.

Malacia, who made 136 appearances for Feyenoord, is the first new arrival of Erik ten Hag's tenure as United manager following his move from Ajax.

"It's an incredible feeling to have joined," he said.

Malacia added: "This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager leading us.

"I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.

"While I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt."

The left-sided defender had been in talks with French club Lyon before United stepped in.

It had been hoped the deal for Malacia would be done on Monday but it was delayed waiting for a work permit.

It is anticipated he will now be part of the United squad that leaves for its pre-season trip to Thailand and Australia on Friday afternoon.

John Murtough, United's football director, said: "Tyrell is an exciting, dynamic young footballer with excellent experience for his age, including five seasons in the Eredivisie, a European final and full International honours for the Netherlands.

"We look forward to seeing him continue to develop under the guidance of Erik ten Hag and his coaching team in the years ahead."

The announcement comes just a day after it was reported Denmark international Christian Eriksen had agreed on principle to join United.

The 30-year-old's short-term contract at Brentford ended last month and it is believed Eriksen could also have returned to Thomas Frank's side, but the lure of playing for United proved too much.

A three-year contract is being prepared for the midfielder, who is still to have his medical at Old Trafford.

    Not going to lie, don’t know much about the player. Can’t be too bad if named defender of the season at the Dutch league and being young and pacy could add a lot of value. Wishing you all the best for your career young one.

    United are always criticised, so this is bound to happen here. Starting with a young and upcoming signing and adding a free and more experienced player, seem like a good start. The United squad is quite young overall, so getting the blend correct will be important. They may not challenge for the title, but need to be more competitive.

    Considering the success the last three Dutch signings (Blind, DePay and Van De Beek) have had at Man Utd, not holding my breath on this latest signing.

    Quality young talent at a good price. Good things starting to happen at United. I think Ten Hag's just what we've needed. Time will tell.

    Things are starting to move..so 2 establised internationals for 13m ....it sure looks like good business to me, especially with other clubs spending up to 100m on players who are untried in the premier league.

    ten Hag knows very well what he needs. He is also in a very good position within the club. He will get at least two seasons before expected results (such as CL and competing for PL) needs to come in. If he show steady progress and the team getting better its already a win situation for both club and manager. United have been awful after Alex F and need to rebuild (team and club)

      You may think that, but the Utd fans and team owners patience may not stretch that far.
      I think unless he gets at least a top six finish this season and at least a fourth place the season after, the Utd faithful will be calling for his head.

    Ten Hag seems to be working in the right way - identifying players as per how he wants the team to play, not jst a big name.

    If klopp had made this signing all the Liverpool fans would be heralding this guy as the next gem to develop that he had found, judge him on his performances not his (lack of) reputation

    I was always a great admirer of Marcelo. Alexander-Arnold and Robertson have similar attributes, but get all sorts of unreasonable stick.

    My point is that full-backs have a huge part to play in the modern game.

    I'm pretty sure that Trent/Robertson provide at least as many assists as De Bruyne does (each).

    If the young man can learn from these guys, he won't far wrong.

    Why does it seem City & Pool are the only teams that actually do long term scouting on possible acquisitions?
    Everyone else just seems to take who is recently available

      Because all players know that until Liverpool, Man City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG or Juventus have all officially said 'No' to them, they should not be talking to any other team other than these listed teams.

    This all feels a bit like Van Gaal's time at United - You can sign all the players from the Dutch league you like but it just won't be enough in the Prem. sigh
