  1. Ward-Prowse or Phillips to replace suspended Alvarez?published at 11:55 28 March

    Michael Brown

BBC Sport pundit Michael Brown has been answering your questions on all things Premier League.

Henry asked: Edson Alvarez has been a key player in midfield for us this season, alongside Soucek, but he misses our next three games because of suspension [for yellow card accumulation]. Who would you play instead of him for the games he misses; James Ward-Prowse or Kalvin Phillips?

Michael replied: David Moyes needs to try and find a way of fitting both of those into the team.

Phillips will get going but he needs games and he needs to relax. He has been dealt the blow of not being in the England squad and that was a concern of mine when he made the move.

Moyes can move things around, but there seems to be a lot of uncertainty at West Ham because of the managerial situation that is still lingering on.

I would not want to play either - I would want to play both.

  2. Newcastle v West Ham: Pick of the statspublished at 16:08 27 March

Here are the key facts and figures before Saturday's Premier League fixture between Newcastle and West Ham.

    • Newcastle have lost just one of their past nine Premier League meetings with West Ham, a 4-2 home defeat in August 2021.

    • However, West Ham have lost just one of their past five Premier League games at Newcastle, going down 3-2 in April 2021.

    • The Magpies have picked up 73% of their points in the league this season at St James' Park, with only Fulham (74%) having a higher home ratio.

    • Newcastle are one of three sides - along with Manchester City and Tottenham - to have scored in all of their Premier League home games this season, while the Magpies have also kept a league-high seven clean sheets at home.

    • Only the bottom two sides - Sheffield United (12) and Burnley (11) - are on a longer run without a clean sheet in the Premier League this season than West Ham's nine.

    • No player has created more chances from set-plays in the Premier League this season than Hammers midfielder James Ward-Prowse (37, level with Alfie Doughty of Luton Town), while he has league-high six assists from set-pieces.

  3. Bowen outlines England ambitionspublished at 11:16 27 March

    Jarrod BowenImage source, Getty Images

Jarrod Bowen enjoyed arguably his best night in an England shirt when the Three Lions drew 2-2 with Belgium at Wembley on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old West Ham forward thought he had got his first goal for Gareth Southgate's side but it was ruled out for offside.

As well as this opportunity, the winger was bright throughout and outlined his ambitions to be on the plane to Germany after the match.

"There is no question I want it more than ever," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"The main thing now is to go back to West Ham, hit the ground running there, keep doing what I've been doing all season and hope I get the opportunity.

"There is a lot of football to be played before that squad is named.

"I have been in a good place this season and the main thing was to continue to do what I've been doing."

  4. What do the Hammers need until the end of the season?published at 13:05 26 March

As we wait patiently for the international break to pass by so we can get back to more important matters, it is fair to say the next few months could be huge for West Ham. We are preparing for a third consecutive European quarter-final, with the unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen standing in our way.

Meanwhile, domestically, we are fighting for a top-eight finish, which could be enough for European qualification - our fourth straight continental qualification. It would extend what is already the club's longest-run competition in Europe in history.

Whatever happens between now and the end of the season will help address the speculation surrounding David Moyes' future. Sections want him out, others recognise just how far he has taken us since he returned in December 2019.

To keep his job, he will have to either win the Europa League or qualify for Europe again. The latter may not even be enough for him to stay, but it will be the club's aim at the very least. But how does he give himself a fighting chance of sticking around longer in east London?

Primarily, it will rest heavily on the fitness of three of his key players. Lucas Paqueta, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen - but the likes of Edson Alvarez and Michail Antonio will also prove important.

Their fitness and form will allow Moyes to improve the approach to go at teams a bit more, offering the attacking freedom that saw his side blow away Brentford and thrash Freiburg. More of that, and we will be on the right track.

But the third and most important thing that needs to happen is a collective desire to push forward and get us over the line - players, staff and fans alike. The relationship between Moyes and fans has been fractured over the past 18 months, but if European qualification and a continued run in the Europa League is to happen this season, then we all need to pull together to get us over the line. As one.

Once the final ball has been kicked, the debate can continue.

Until then, we need to stick together.

  6. 'Late substitutions infuriate me' - your biggest gripes of the seasonpublished at 13:00 25 March

    Your views banner

We asked you what the most irritating thing at your club has been this season, whether it be inconsistency, injuries or a player failing to deliver.

Here are some of your replies:

Iain: As a West Ham fan for more than 50 years, I am slightly fed up with all those fans calling for Moyes to be sacked! He's been our best manager since John Lyall and apart from some negativity in certain home matches against the lower-placed teams, has the team balanced and playing generally well. Give Moyes a break, West Ham fans.

Harry: It’s hard to pick one thing that frustrates me with West Ham as they have been very inconsistent. But the late substitutions infuriate me. Also when we are finally playing attacking football and go ahead, Moyes changes to a defensive style of play which usually ends up with us conceding and throwing away the lead.

Steve: Moyes. Where do you start? Won't give youth a chance. Boring football. Won't play with a striker. Flair players get bombed out. Players played out of position. Kalvin Phillips/£8m over four months. Total waste of money.

  7. The left-hand-side 'dilemma' - England XI for Euros - published at 17:19 22 March

    BBC Sport pundit Michael Brown
Pickford, Walker, Maguire, Stones, Chilwell, Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Palmer, Saka and Kane

England do not have a natural player who would be our obvious number one on the left-hand-side and it is a slight concern given it is not as clear-cut as other areas of the pitch.

Do you play Phil Foden out on the left and bring and let Kobbie Mainoo, Conor Gallagher or Kalvin Phillips force their way in? This is my dilemma.

If we are talking on current form then Cole Palmer gets the nod from me. Ideally you would not want to play Palmer in that position, but he has done it before.

Foden could go central or off the left-hand-side.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford is also an extremely experienced player who can play in that role. He just needs a good eight remaining weeks of the season.

There is one other curveball. Does Gareth Southgate see Trent Alexander-Arnold in that other midfield spot? If he does, then that would release Foden out on to the left.

We also know Jack Grealish can play off that left-hand-side but he needs to get back from injury because he could be a late push for that position as well. He has got to get back and play some minutes for Manchester City, but he could fit there.

We’re going to see Gareth Southgate’s hand in these next two friendlies. Let’s see how he starts against Brazil. Will he use it to work on that midfield three and use Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Foden?

  10. Why a time limit is needed for VAR reviewspublished at 13:00 19 March

    James Jones
    Fan writer

    West Ham fan's voice graphic

I don't want to go down the whole 'VAR is against West Ham' route - but it's difficult not to feel that way after the past few games.

The latest calls in the draw with Aston Villa are the hardest to stomach. Two goals were ruled out for handball. The second, in the third of seven added minutes at the end of the game, took almost six minutes to review. It was the longest VAR decision in the history of the Premier League.

It was handball, there's no question about that, but the on-field decision to give the goal should have stood. Why? Because if a video assistant referee review takes almost six minutes, was the on-field decision really a clear and obvious error?

After all, the International Football Association Board's VAR protocol clearly states: "The original decision given by the referee will not be changed unless the video review clearly shows that the decision was a clear and obvious error."

The same could be said for the first goal that was ruled out for handball. The footage does not clearly show a handball offence. It's not clear whether Michail Antonio handles it or if the ball comes off his body. It may have been handball, but the footage is inconclusive. Yet the goal was still ruled out.

Furthermore, the protocol also states: "There there is no time limit for the review process, as accuracy is more important than speed." This is where I think the problem lies.

Having no time limit for VAR reviews overrides the protocol of only correcting clear and obvious errors. It gives referees and the VAR the ability to take as long as they want to find reasons to disallow goals, even where there aren't any "clear and obvious" reasons to do so.

I think that is what happened on Sunday. So long had passed, arguably for both decisions, that a need was felt to rule the goal out regardless, as justification for taking so long to reach a decision.

There has to be a time limit introduced to ensure the protocol can do what it is supposed to do, instead of acting as an excuse to spend so long searching for 'unobvious' errors.

  11. In-form Bowen relishing England opportunitypublished at 18:04 18 March

Jarrod Bowen looks on for West HamImage source, Getty Images

Jarrod Bowen wants to take the "same enjoyment of football" into playing for England as he has with West Ham this season.

The forward has scored 18 goals this campaign, earning him another call-up from Gareth Southgate for his national side's friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

"I've been picked on my form playing here and every time you go into the international break you have to do it with that mindset of doing what you've been doing at club level," said Bowen.

"Don't try to do too much, don't try to impress too much. I always think that can backfire on you.

"It's going in with that same mindset and the same enjoyment of football. Go in there and try to impress. When you get your opportunity, it's important that you take it."

The 27-year-old has been instrumental in helping the Hammers compete for a European spot in the Premier League this season. With West Ham in seventh, he believes the race for Europe will go right to the wire.

"There are a lot of teams in the equation," he said. "Wolves have had some really good form and picked up, there's Brighton, Newcastle, even Fulham who have won a few games and started to pick up.

"So, I wouldn't say it's just us and Manchester United. There are a lot of teams around us, five or six.

"You can talk about a top-four race, it's the top-six or seven race as well. It'll be an exciting end to the season - we play a couple of the teams around us, so it's almost in our hands. If we beat them, we take control of it."

  12. Your views on West Ham v Aston Villapublished at 10:51 18 March

    Your views graphic

We asked for your thoughts on Saturday's game between West Ham and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Here are some of your responses:

    West Ham fans

Jay: Absolutely robbed! VAR is ruining football. Taking 10 minutes to make a decision is not 'obvious' and it shouldn't count. VAR has robbed us in the past three games. The lads played unbelievably and Moyes should come out like this every week!

Dave: Yet again another Moyes cock up with the use of substitutes. Why, with a fair length of the game to go, does Moyes take off our main striker and put on a defender. It’s senseless when you have that much time left and are only one goal up. This is two points lost because of poor management. Hurry up and go, Moyes.

Richard: Moyes' tactics again. He took off Antonio and brought on a defender, Ben Johnson, who is arguably not Premier League quality anyway. If Antonio is tired, why not replace him with Danny Ings? 1-0 was not enough. We needed to attack, not defend the lead.

Ted: Once more, terrible officiating in the Premier League. The richest football league in the world. Awful officiating every week - week in and week out. The pundits and fans talk about the execrable referees and bizarre VAR.

    Villa fans

Keith: We were lucky not to lose this game, but it was a very welcome point. Villa played well and were the better team. We have to be better in defence and, more importantly, in front of goal, if we are going to consolidate a fourth-place finish.

Brian: A poor first half for Villa, with some very sloppy work in defence. There were too many unforced errors. We looked like a different team in the second half but, in the end, we were lucky to come away with a point.

Paul: We dodged one at the end, but it was a fair result overall. I think West Ham were better in first half, but Villa were much better in the second half.

Pammy: As usual, a sub-standard and lethargic performance after a European tie. Far too casual in the first half, but thankfully a point rescued by the second half substitutes and change in formation. The Watkins-Duran idea just didn’t work and Rogers is not good enough. A decent point in the end and it keeps the pressure on Spurs and Manchester United. Another fairy step to a top-four finish!
