    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

This was my worry for Liverpool when you look at how Real Madrid got here. PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City it tells you they have such a tough mentality.

They were down and out so many times. So many people said Man City should have beat them, they got lucky. They didn't get lucky it is their attitude, their manager and their experience and their quality up top. They had to rely on that tonight and their goalkeeper.

He is the man of the match.

  2. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has won four European Cups as a manager, a record. Two came with AC Milan and two with Real Madrid.

That takes him above Bob Paisley, Zinedine Zidane and everyone else.

Ancelotti also won two as a player, both with Milan.

  3. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Carlo Ancelotti has been there, seen it and done it. What about him and his incredible career, it is absolutely staggering.

  4. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

    Chris Sutton

Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

There is not one Liverpool fan still in the stadium. It has clearly been an unhappy evening for them.

The Real Madrid players are still over in the corner celebrating with their families and their are thousands of white shirts in the stands.

Amrul Choudhury: Several occasions Real Madrid have been second best against technically gifted sides... But they are first at mental steel and determination and that is what won them the UCL...

Alex Coe: That was the fourth match that Liverpool have lost this season in all competitions. It’s not exactly been a terrible season.

Kristian Hardiman: If you want a more balanced assessment of Liverpool. Amazing league form. Two cups won on penalties, with relatively generous cup runs, and one champions league final with a generous knock out pathway.

  6. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal, Marcelo, Gareth Bale and Isco have all won five Champions Leagues, a joint record (with a few other people).

Only Real Madrid legend Paco Gento (six) won more European Cups, including the olden days.

  7. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

    Chris Sutton

Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Real Madrid just know how to win. Their big players turned up tonight.

  8. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

Rio Ferdinand, on BT Sport, says it would be a travesty if Karim Benzema doesn't win the Ballon d'Or.

  9. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

After the season that they have had to have the disappointment of losing out on the league and then this one as well, they [Liverpool] can still be very proud of what they have achieved this season.

  10. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

Uefa has issued a statement on the pre-match problems outside the stadium...

"In the lead-up to the game, the turnstiles at the Liverpool end became blocked by thousands fans who had purchased fake tickets which did not work in the turnstiles.

"This created a build-up of fans trying to get in. As a result, the kick-off was delayed by 35 minutes to allow as many fans as possible with genuine tickets to gain access.

"As numbers outside the stadium continued to build up after kick-off, the police dispersed them with tear gas and forced them away from the stadium.

"Uefa is sympathetic to those affected by these events and will further review these matters urgently together with the French police and authorities, and with the French Football Federation."

  11. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

    Julien Laurens

French football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

They were probably not even the better team so many times in the Champions League this season. How many times have they been on top of the opposition. Tonight they were under pressure for most of it but Courtois just had one of those games.

Liverpool could have had 25 shots, the game could have gone on another half an hour and Liverpool would not have scored because he was that good. I don't know if on the plane home tonight they will celebrate or fall asleep.

This is an incredible generation. They have won it five times in eight years, the biggest competition at club level, the toughest one to win.

  12. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

    Chris Sutton

Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It has still been a great season for Liverpool, the whole ride. The FA Cup, the League Cup, yes they've missed out in the league to a brilliant Manchester City side and then tonight they are pipped at the post.

It will feel more sour because of the situation with their fans not getting into the stadium.

  13. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

Karim Benzema, with 15 goals, is the second Frenchman to win the Champions League golden boot.

The other only needed five goals, Marseille's Franck Sauzee in 1992-93

  14. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

There should be absolutely no surprise to learn that the ofifical Uefa man of the match is Thibaut Courtois.

He made nine saves tonight, the most on record by a goalkeeper in a Champions League final (since at least 2003-04).

  15. Post update

    Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid's Marcelo, who didn't even get on the pitch, gets the trophy and carries it over to his team-mates.

They lift the trophy aloft as fireworks go off in the Paris sky.

REAL MADRID ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE FOR A 14TH TIME.
