Premier League: Diaz rescues point against Palace after Nunez red - reaction

Liverpool have failed to win either of their first two games in a Premier League season for the fifth time and first time since 2012-13.

The last time the Reds went onto lift the top-flight title having failed to win their first two games in a season was in 1981-82.

However, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 21 Premier League games (W16 D5), the longest current run in the competition.

They’ve also found the net at least once in each of these 21 games, also the longest ongoing run.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "I cannot really be disappointed with the result because of the story of the game. I am proud of the performance. This was a proper LFC game, the way we started and put them under pressure. Palace had an idea, to sit deep and look for counter attacks. It is really uncomfortable to play against them, especially with the quality, speed and technique they have. I don't know how many shots they blocked in the first half. We played not a good game last week so you need to find a bit. It was like that for 30-35 minutes but conceded a goal and we were not like that again. At half-time, positive talk to get back to how we started but then there was a struggle. Everything was in place and then we get the red card and it was a red card. Provocation but still a red card. The reaction was absolutely outstanding. Luis scored a worldy and their players fought with all they had. Is a point the dream result? No, but it what we got and you always have to take something away from games. We take things from the last two games.

Is another point a big setback?: "I know how the world is, but I cannot see it like this. Maybe yes. We had a really tricky week. Every day someone pulls up. And you think 'what is going on here? Do we have a witch in the building?' Somebody ask me before the game if it is a good game for Darwin to start? Yes, because we don't have another striker and also he is good. It was tough. But the reaction is what we will take. We want to fight, we are Liverpool. If we can't play like geniuses in the moment then give it a go and that is what we did."

On Nunez: "I cannot deny it is a red card. I will leave him alone for a night and then talk to him tomorrow."

More from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "Everything went against us in the week before, it was like we had a witch in the building with all the injuries, so I am proud in the way we responded.

"We needed direction to get in behind the line of five and I thought we were really strong. That was the message before the game."

On the red card: "Darwin knows he let his teammates down. I will talk to him. It was not a reaction we want to see. He know he will be challenged in this way, centre-halves will do that, but it is not a reaction we want.

"But we will use the time productively. We will use the suspension for physical work to make him strong - not a punishment but to make him stronger."

On the equaliser: "Luis's goal was unbelievable. He put in a super intense game and an incredible goal, of course we needed that.

"We had two other nice opportunities we were a bit unlucky with, but it's a point. Not what we wanted before the game, but in then end we will take it."

On taking two points from first two games: "Not the start we wanted but two points is the least of our problems right now. It's really tricky with injuries. We have to use next week to maybe bring one or two back, although I don't know if that is possible.

"We have lost Darwin now as well, which does not help, but Bobby might be back, we will see."

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira: "I am really pleased. It is not an easy place to come and we defended well as a team. We were prepared to suffer and did. In our counter-attacks we were good. We needed a big team performance and we had it tonight.

"When we won the ball Wilf ran in behind and the timing of his run was really good. Wilf is a goalscorer. Today he could score more than one.

"When you come to these places you accept you will go through difficult periods. It is about how you manage those and I think we did it will. The first 20 minutes, half an hour was tough but we were really composed, calm and disciplined. That helped us perform well.

"If we don't bring those ingredients, it is really difficult to get something from that game. We competed against them and worked hard. This is the minimum we can do. Then we need the organisation and discipline. We got the point and I am really pleased with that."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking on Sky Sports: "It was a really good start, exactly what we wanted, showing a lot of desire, it was all there.

"We were then unlucky in situations. The game plan for Palace was obviously to have five at the back, get men behind the ball and go for the counter attack. It is difficult with speed of Zaha.

"The second half again started positive, but getting the red card was a knockback. Of course it was a red, he was provoked but that is not how he should behave.

"Then we equalise four mins later. With 10 men, putting in such an effort. My real feeling now is that I am proud."

Liverpool midfielder James Milner, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is disappointing, we always want to win our games, especially at home. I thought we started well and then lost our way in the middle. They have quality and are always going to cause you problems on the break, which we could have defended better. We had chances that we didn't take.

"You are coming up against organised teams, that are going to try and hurt you on the break. They have a lot of good individuals that are unpredictable. It is disappointing but ultimately it is good that we are creating chances. If you are not creating them that is worse. It is not the best start to the season, but we need to keep playing how we started and ended the game. The reaction going down to 10 men was very good and Luis scored a brilliant goal.

"I didn't see the incident [Nunez's red card]. He is going to be disappointed in that. We have to get around him and rally. He will learn from it. The team reacted well and the ground did and got behind us. We could have nicked it but it wasn't to be. Good teams react to disappointments and stick together. You see the readiness for the season and the fight. We have had a tough week and preparations have not been ideal. Nobody can deny we have fighting spirit.

"Sometimes you need a moment of brilliance and when you have players like Luis on the pitch, he can create something out of nothing. It was an incredible goal. Hopefully there will be many more."

Crystal Palace scorer Wilfried Zaha speaking to Sky Sports: "We just knew it was going to be hard work and it was a case of taking our chances. We knew we would have to suffer but our plan was to soak it up and take chances, so I am happy with the point.

On his goal: "They were pushing forward and I was looking for space in behind. It only takes one chance and I am glad I took it today.

"As soon as Eze played it through I had in my mind what I wanted to do. I didn't want the goalkeeper to set himself so I just took it early."

On the season ahead: "We are a good team and handling the big teams well, so I am very optimistic about this season, especially with the way we are playing."

Palace would have snatched your hand off for a point before the game. They'll still be very glad to have taken one now. But three were very much dangled under their nose there after Wilfried Zaha's opener and Nunez's sending off.

A point is scant reward for the amount of the game Liverpool had over the 90 minutes, even with 10 men. It is a second successive draw for the Reds. They'll have wanted much more from Fulham, followed by Palace.

Palace hold on for their point! But that tells only a fraction of the story.

Darwin Nunez's sending off will take the headlines. Luis Diaz's stunning equaliser will get some attention too.

Ultimately, it is disappointment for the home side and delight for the visitors.
