SMS Message: Phil McNulty's piece on Everton's dilemma regarding Anthony Gordon is spot on. Evertonian's will want him to stay obviously but most will realise this is creating an issue for the manager who also clearly rates the player. The opportunity is to sell him to Chelsea and we could receive cash, Gallagher and Broja and hope that Gray, McNeil and Townsend (on returning from injury) do the business. Or do we say no which may stop any opportunity to sign any Chelsea players we've been linked with. Pragmatism has to win and I think we should do it if we can get those 2 I mentioned. Appreciate this may be unpopular with Everton fans but 5 years of woeful club management have created these sort of issues. from Mark

  16. FIFA's World Cup refs warning

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport

In the wake of yesterday's controversies at Stamford Bridge, it is interesting world governing body FIFA has chosen today to urge officials not to rely on technology to help them out at this year's World Cup.

Premier League duo Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor are amongst the 36 referees who will be in duty in Qatar.

VAR’s will also be in operation, with the likelihood being that automated offsides will be used during a World Cup for the first time as well.

However, former leading Italian official Pierluigi Collina, who is now chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, wants the reliance to be sparing and is urging against the liberal use of what are being dubbed ‘robot referees’.

“Technology is there to reduce the possibility of human mistake that can affect the outcome of a match,” said Collina.

“But our objective is to prepare the referee as best as possible to avoid using technology.”

  18. Are Barcelona gambling with their future or just giving fans hope?

    Guillem Balague

    Spanish football journalist

Major signings, ongoing financial issues and plenty of anger from elsewhere in football - Barcelona's summer certainly hasn't been quiet.

Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde have all arrived at the Nou Camp for almost £200m, despite the club being more than £1bn in debt.

To ease the financial pressure in the short term and allow their new signings to be registered, they have sold a percentage of their future television rights and of their media production unit Barca Studios, but the approach of club president Joan Laporta has led to accusations he is gambling with the club's long-term future.

Barca are in a deep hole and trying to get out of it. Is everything they are doing right? No. Are they doing what they are supposed to do? Mostly, yes.

Philip: One of the greatest performances of the Premiership era was the lunchtime kick off between Leeds and Liverpool. Liverpool went 2 - 0 up and 3 - 2 up. But four goals by the wonderful Mark Viduka saw Leeds home 4 - 3.
