Thursday afternoon's tide at 13:00 on 28/03/2024 is higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong Southerly Force 7 winds and large waves. The weather increases tide table values by 0.7 m. The total forecast tide is 5.25 metres Chart Datum (2.52 mAOD) at Portsmouth. For 1 hour either side of high water, in Old Portsmouth, the tide may just exceed the top of the main slipway which will cause minor road flooding in East Street. It could also cause minor disruption to the boat yards at The Camber. Spray overtopping of defence walls at Southsea promenade and Eastern road is also expected. To protect property in Old Portsmouth, tidal defence gates will be closed. After this tide‚ the weather becomes more settled‚ so levels will reduce and no further impacts are expected. We continue to monitor the forecast. We are liaising with the local authority over flood defence gate closures. Avoid walking along the exposed sea front, especially Southsea, at high tide. Spray and large waves can carry and throw shingle and debris. We will remove this message by 18:00 on 28/03/2024.

Groundwater levels in East Surrey and South London have been rising throughout the winter following higher than average rainfall. Levels continued to increase through most of February and until the second half of March in response to heavy rainfall and storm events during the previous month. The Caterham Bourne between Woldingham and Purley is now flowing along its course. On 15 March 2024, the Environment Agency installed equipment to monitor the flow and levels on the Caterham Bourne in Kenley Bourne Park.

Properties with deep basements and low lying land in and around Purley and the Caterham Bourne may experience flooding. Riparian owners are reminded to keep clear the sections of river that flow through their land. Flooding of properties, gardens and low lying land elsewhere is not expected at this point in time.

The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation alongside Surrey County Council, Tandridge District Council and the London Borough of Croydon. We will update this message on Wednesday 3 April 2024, or sooner if the situation changes.

The water level in the Bourne Rivulet remains high but continues to slowly fall. Upstream at Vernham Deane, the groundwater, which is controlling the level in the river, has been reducing for almost two weeks. Very minor impact flooding is affecting land in St Mary Bourne. Unsettled weather with showers and rain, heavy at times is now expected for the next 5 days (to Saturday 30/3/24). Half a month’s rainfall (40mm could be recorded in this time). Despite this, the groundwater level will continue to fall. A small temporary rise (2-4cms by the end of the week) will be seen in the river, increasing flood depths in fields. The current forecast suggests further wet weather is likely for the next 10 days. Whether the groundwater continues to fall, and the overall situation improves, will be very dependent on the volume of rain which affects the area next week. Our flood barrier will remain in place at St Mary Bourne to reduce flood risk. We will update or remove this message by Friday 29/3/24 by 17:00.

Periods of rain are forecast Tuesday and Thursday 28/03/2024, with showers Wednesday 27/03/2024 and through the weekend, although not thought to be enough to cause groundwater to rise significantly. Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater levels are currently rising at our Tile Barn Farm borehole near the Sherborne St John area as a result of persistent rainfall and saturated grounds. Groundwater levels are above normal for this time of year and have now reached a level where communities may be affected by groundwater flooding within the next few days. We expect levels to remain high over the next few days and levels remain sensitive to further sustained rainfall. Low-lying land and roads will therefore continue to be at risk of flooding. We are continuing to monitor groundwater levels and will update this message next week by 02/04/2024, or as the situation changes.

If this does occur, then flood water may affect the electricity sub-station and the road at Rectory Lane, Meonstoke from next week. However, if levels fall over the next week and there is no heavy rainfall in the forecast, we will likely remove this Flood Alert. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast. Please remain prepared for further flooding impacts in the coming weeks. This Flood Alert will be updated by 18:00 on Tuesday 02/04/2024.
