The little-known origin of the term 'fake news'

Historian Simon Schama explores how a phrase very similar to the term ‘fake news’ was co-opted by the Jacobin government in France to silence any ‘enemies of the people’.

Those ‘enemies’ were foreigners like English writer Mary Wollstonecraft, whose feminist writings were thought to be inspired by her time in France during those tumultuous years.
