  2. Flood alert

Areas affected: Groundwater flooding in Hambledon

    ACTIVE

Started at: 12:11 BST on Thu 25 April

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater levels in Hambledon are high, but continue to slowly fall. At our borehole at Whitedale Farm, the level has fallen by 2.01m in the last week. Groundwater levels have now fallen below the level we would expect cellar flooding to be ongoing, although some residual water may still be present. Rain is forecast to affect Hampshire from today (25/04/2024) to Monday 29/04/2024, with some heavy spells possible over the weekend. It is possible that between 20 and 50mm of rain could be recorded during this time. Groundwater levels are expected to continue slowly falling initially, but could stabilise and even rise slightly if heavy rain affects Hambledon. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast. Please remain prepared for further flooding impacts as groundwater levels will be responsive to heavy rainfall. This Flood Alert will be updated by 18:00 on Thursday 02/05/2024.

  3. Flood alert

Areas affected: Groundwater flooding in West Dean, Singleton, Charlton, East Dean and Chilgrove

    ACTIVE

Started at: 12:03 BST on Thu 25 April

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater is high, within 50cm of the surface at the East Dean borehole, but slowly falling two centimetres a day. Minor groundwater flood impacts are expected to continue, affecting the ability of the sewage network to operate in East Dean, Charlton, Singleton and West Dean. Water will affect some basements, and be underneath ground floors. Small amounts of water will affect roads, including possibly the B2141 to Chilgrove. Showers are possible Thursday and Friday evenings, with unsettled weather through next week. Generally only minimal flood impacts are expected. However, a lot of rain could affect Sussex Saturday evening, through to midday Sunday 28/04/2024. Groundwater in the villages could rise a couple of centimetres, and may slow in its fall at the Chilgrove borehole. Water will affect roads. Minor flood impacts affecting the sewage network could continue through to mid May. If you have pumps to help reduce groundwater levels in your property, ensure they are operational. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast. We will update this message by 18:00 30/04/2024

    ACTIVE

Started at: 12:03 BST on Thu 25 April

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater is high, close to the surface at the Compton borehole, but falling thirty centimetres each day. Minor groundwater flood impacts are expected to continue, with springs affecting fields, and water on roads including Stoughton main road and the road from East Marden. Groundwater could affect a small number of properties close to the village green Stoughton. Groundwater could affect basements of properties in Walderton too. Showers are possible Thursday and Friday evenings. A lot of rain could affect Sussex Saturday evening, through to midday Sunday 28/04/2024. If this rain occurs, groundwater could slow in its fall at the Compton borehole, and during Sunday more water will flow on roads. More unsettled weather and showers are forecast next week. Groundwater will not fall fast and will remain higher than normal, and minor flood impacts could persist until mid May. If you have pumps to help reduce groundwater levels in your property, ensure they are operational. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast. We will update this message by 18:00 30/04/2024

    ACTIVE

Started at: 14:04 BST on Wed 24 April

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater levels in East Surrey and South London have been rising throughout the winter following higher than average rainfall. Levels continued to increase through most of February and until the second half of March in response to heavy rainfall and storm events during the previous month. The Caterham Bourne is in flow since mid-March and is still flowing in the Whyteleafe and Kenley area and the Environment Agency is monitoring the levels and flow of the Bourne in Kenley Bourne Park. At times of very heavy rainfall, some properties with deep basements and low lying land in and around Purley and the Caterham Bourne could still experience flooding. Riparian owners are reminded to keep clear the sections of river that flow through their land. Flooding of properties, gardens and low lying land elsewhere is not expected at this point in time. The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation alongside Surrey County Council, Tandridge District Council and the London Borough of Croydon. We will update this message on Thursday 2 May 2024, or sooner if the situation changes.

Areas affected: Groundwater flooding in the Alton area

    ACTIVE

Started at: 11:08 BST on Tue 23 April

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater levels remain high at our Farringdon borehole near Alton. Groundwater levels remain above normal levels for this time of year and are currently stabilised at this level. The catchment remains sensitive to rainfall due to the saturated ground and levels may start to increase again if we receive further rainfall. Low-lying land, gardens, roads and cellars will therefore continue to be at risk of flooding. Due to the nature of groundwater behaviour, this situation could continue for several weeks or longer. An overall stabilising trend is expected as we move out of the winter period. However, any heavy rainfall may change the trends and prolong high levels or cause levels to rise again.
We are continuing to monitor groundwater levels and will update this message on 30/04/2024, or as the situation changes.

Started at: 11:08 BST on Tue 23 April

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater levels are currently rising at our Tile Barn Farm borehole near the Sherborne St John area as a result of persistent rainfall and saturated grounds.

Areas affected: Groundwater flooding in East Kent

    ACTIVE

Started at: 15:53 BST on Fri 19 April

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater levels in East Kent remain high but stable. The Alkham Bourne and the Nailbourne between Lyminge and Littlebourne are flowing. Localised flooding will continue to affect low-lying land, roads, and water infrastructure around the Elham Valley, Alkham and Petham. Other communities in East Kent may also be impacted. Please avoid walking or driving through flood water. The forecast indicates that high pressure is building into next week, bringing drier conditions. Outbreaks of rain and showers are still possible at times. We are monitoring the situation and are working with local authorities and communities with the deployment of temporary defences, such as Canterbury City Council’s temporary defences in Barham and the Littlebourne Flood Relief channel. Our staff are maintaining and clearing key structures. Over the next few months, sunnier conditions will likely result in a reduction in aquifer recharge, leading to a fall in groundwater levels. This message will be updated by 6pm on Friday 26th April 2024. Search 'Kent Groundwater situation' on gov.uk. for more information.
