Adjournment motion on a more inclusive workplace for breastfeeding mothers

26:28 Min

The Government uses the law and incentives to ensure that more lactation facilities are available. It also promotes an inclusive and supportive work culture for nursing mothers. Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Finance and National Development Indranee Rajah, who highlighted this two-pronged approach in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 2), said the Government will continue to review the requirements from time to time. She also stressed that mindsets are key in making the work culture inclusive and supportive. She pointed out that the Government has put in place a comprehensive package of measures to support parents in their marriage and parenthood journey. It will continue to review these measures to address their needs. It is also working with its tripartite partners to support employers to do more for nursing mothers at work and to promote best practices. She made these points in response to an adjournment motion tabled by MP Louis Ng. Mr Ng stressed the need to provide more lactation rooms and paid lactation breaks for nursing mothers. He urged the Government to mandate the provision of more lactation rooms in buildings that have offices and business parks. He also proposed legislating paid lactation breaks. He said legislation can also spark cultural change and a broader conversation about how expressing milk can be normalised and supported at the workplace. Mr Ng hopes Singapore can move towards "embracing" rather than "tolerating" breastfeeding.
