Pritam Singh on Constitution of the Republic of Singapore (Amendment No. 2) Bill

02:14 Min

In Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 2), Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh said the Workers’ Party (WP) would vote against the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore (Amendment No. 2) Bill as a matter of principle. This is because the Bill adds the new Chief of the Digital and Intelligence Service to the list of key public sector appointments that must be agreed to by the President. Mr Singh noted that WP is on record in Parliament with regards to the prospect of gridlock if any elected President withholds nominations to key appointments, particularly in the context of a new government defeating the People’s Action Party in the general elections. It has advocated returning the presidency to an appointed office without blocking powers.
